FACE Africa Project Update - Williamtown

In late 2010, FACE Africa conducted a technical WASH need assessment in the Fendall area of Montserrado County, Liberia, about 25 miles outside of the capital Monrovia. Results of the need assessment showed that there was a serious need for WASH intervention in several villages in the area. Clean drinking water was a major concern for residents of villages in the area. While rain and streams are fairly plentiful during the rainy season (June through October), the villages' reserves deplete quickly during the dry season and residents have no access to hand pumps or wells forcing them to drink from contaminated creeks and swamp water. The communities also had no latrine facilities, forcing residents to urinate and defecate in the nearby swamp, which exposed them to a number of pathogens and disease-carrying animals and insects. FACE Africa selected Joezohn and Williamtown for intervention due the size of the villages and their relative accessibility.

In July 2011, FACE Africa received a generous grant of $10,000 from the Global Neighborhood Fund to complement our WASH efforts in the area. The purpose of the project was to provide safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities and hygiene education to residents of Williamtown and surrounding villages. To support these efforts and ensure sustainability, the project also focused on building the capacity of the community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene committee in water point management and maintenance. We also undertook intensive health and hygiene promotion within the community to encourage positive behavioral change and improved personal hygiene practices.

In addition to the hand pump, FACE Africa also constructed 2 communal latrines (2 cubicles each) and 2 hand washing stands in Williamtown, giving community members access to safe sanitary facilities. We conducted community mobilisation and sensitisation, and in partnership with the men and women of Williamtown, selected appropriate sites and verified these as suitable for latrine construction. The construction of all 4 cubicles and 2 hand washing stands was completed as planned, and the facilities are now being used by the communities. All construction activities of the latrines are in line with the Government of Liberia's 'Guidelines for Latrine Construction in Liberia.'

The entire project which began on June 1, was completed on June 15 and the keys turned over to the community on June 17, 2012. With the active participation of our partners and the entire Williamtown community, the project was successfully implemented and has achieved its goal and objective. The project has successfully ensured that over 300 residents in Williamtown and hundreds more in surrounding villages have access to safe drinking water, hygienic sanitary facilities, and health and hygiene information to improve their health and well-being. Mechanisms were also put in place to ensure that project facilities and interventions will be used, maintained and sustained beyond the end of this project, thus ensuring the long-term impact of our work.

The residents of Williamtown and the entire FACE Africa team are extremely grateful to the Global Neighborhood Fund for their financial support! Read more>>
