SOAR Strives for Sustainability: Celebrate Earth Hour

Earth Hour 2011 is Saturday, March 26, 8:30-9:30 pm.

Presented locally by ComEd, Earth Hour is a global movement in support of a more sustainable future for our planet. Last year, hundreds of millions around the world turned out their lights in support of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour 2011 is about going beyond the hour. We're asking everyone to take additional steps in their daily lives to make our world a better place. This could mean riding your bike to work once a week, starting a recycling program at your school or office, or simply being more mindful of electricity usage in your home or business.

Together, our actions add up.

Construction Update

NMH's childcare parking garage utility update

The Water ("H20") utility tie in work for NMH's childcare parking garage will return to Ontario Street today, March 23, 2011.  This work will be the most involved of the utilities.

The work will start on the south side of Ontario from our property and work north across Ontario.  First, traffic will be permitted through the north lane while work starts on the south side of Ontario.  Second, when the work moves to the north side of Ontario the south traffic lane will be open to traffic.   Finally, the City of Chicago Water Department will inspect the pipe and authorize the water cutoff.  The Water Department actually performs the tie-in with the assistance from the utility contractor.  The City of Chicago will notify the affected buildings of the time for H20 cut-off.

In some instances the Water Department will schedule the tie-in for nighttime hours. However, it's the City who ultimately makes the decision.

SOAR Strives for Sustainability: Greening Tip

pictureGet Unlisted; Reduce Waste

The City of Chicago has joined forces with Catalog Choice to offer Chicagoans a free service to reduce unwanted mail.

Any resident or business can create an account at https://chicago.catalogchoice.org to reduce unsolicited catalogs, phone books, credit card offers, coupons and other marketing material received at home and in the workplace. We encourage you to participate!

"We've identified waste reduction as a crucial strategy to meet the goals of our Chicago Climate Action Plan (CCAP)," says Chicago Department of Environment Commissioner Suzanne Malec-McKenna. "The mail preference service with Catalog Choice will cut paper waste at the source and offers an ease of use that we know Chicago citizens and businesses will appreciate."

Annually, Chicagoans send more than 300,000 tons of paper to landfills; material that could be diverted instead. By eliminating or recycling this material, the City can make serious gains towards the CCAP goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through our waste management strategies.

This program is supported by the Chicago Department of the Environment.
