When: Wednesday, March 2, 2011 5:30 pm Registration 6:00 pm Program
Please RSVP today. Reservations can also be made by calling 312.280.2596.
Join us as we learn sustainability practices directly from keynote speaker, Doug Farr, founding principal of the architecture and urban design firm Farr Associates. Based in Chicago, the firm is widely regarded as one of the most sustainable practices in the country, holding the unique distinction of being the first firm in the world to design three LEED Platinum buildings.
Doug was the founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) Core Committee- the interdisciplinary group of professionals that created this first ever rating system for sustainable land development. Launching in 2009, LEED-ND integrates smart growth, walkability, and green building practices into standards and metrics that scale up sustainability to a neighborhood level.
Based on the firm's pioneering sustainable design practice and his insights gained from chairing LEED-ND, Doug authored the urban planning best-seller Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature in 2008.
Special guest Nicholas Aitken has developed keen interests in sustainability, transportation and infrastructure. Nicholas has completed his dissertation in the social and physical consequences of daylighting urban rivers in addition to the social and environmental qualities that art can bring to the community. Nicholas will discuss relevant thoughts and recommendations on how to our community can enhance sustainability initiatives in Streeterville.
This event is brought to you by SOAR's Greening & Sustainability Committee and is being generously hosted by the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

East Lake Shore Drive
| |
The Benjamin Marshall Society will celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of East Lake Shore Drive and the vision of architect extraordinaire, Benjamin Marshall, on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Drake Hotel.
In 1911, Marshall, who doubled as a developer, began turning landfill east of Michigan Avenue into what is now East Lake Shore Drive. The street's imposing row of limestone, terra cotta and brick buildings, which rise like a cliff above Oak Street Beach, is one of the postcard images of Chicago.
It is the Society's mission to educate the public on Benjamin Marshall, his life and works - which include Chicago's Drake Hotel, Edgewater Beach Hotel, South Shore Country Club, Blackstone Theater, and Blackstone Hotel. The Society strives to revive Benjamin Marshall's dialogue on the civic responsibility of the urban architect and the role of architecture, planning and design in the urban environment and in society as a whole.

| Greening Tip |
|
Lightening your computing environmental footprint
We can all do our bit in lessening our impact and the following are tips for more earth friendly computing, some of which will also save you cash!
- When not in use for extended periods, switch your computer off at the wall to avoid phantom power load consumption.
- Have your power saving/management options enabled and properly configured for periods when your computer is temporarily not in use. In Windows, this can be found in Settings/Control Panel/Power Options.
- During usage, only have your screen as bright as you need it - unnecessarily bright screens really chew the juice.
- If you're going to use a screen saver, use a blank (black) screen - animated screen savers just consume electricity unnecessarily.
- When buying components and peripheral items, try to choose those that come in the least amount of plastic packaging as possible.
- For your next computer, consider a notebook instead of desktop - these use under 50% the electricity of a desktop machine.
- Do you really need a 22 inch screen? When considering your next screen purchase, balance your wants with your actual needs.

| Volunteer Opportunities | | |
Get Involved!
There are many ways to become active and engaged in SOAR's efforts in Streeterville. Volunteers can contribute through one-time efforts, work on special events or projects, assist in the office, or participate on an ongoing basis with SOAR's task forces and committees. Streeterville residents 18 years or older are invited and encouraged to get involved. For specific volunteer opportunities, please visit SOAR's website.
Condo Coffee Volunteer
Condo Coffees take place in Streeterville condo buildings on Saturday mornings usually from 9:00-11:00 a.m. We can always use new faces to help us reach out to residents during the Coffee or to help with set-up and tear-down.
If you would like to help us host a Coffee in your building, let us know. All we need from you is a contact or an introduction to whomever it is that makes those decisions and we will do the rest. If you have questions about anything Condo Coffee related, email Sue Graff or call 312.280.2596.
For additional opportunities to make a difference in Streeterville, please volunteer!
