SOAR Wins First Place

This past summer, SOAR accepted the City of Chicago's environmental challenge and participated in the 2010 neighborhood paper drive competition.  In just two weeks, the 24 organizations recycled 61,060 pounds of paper of which SOAR contributed over 10,000 pounds.Paper Drive Cert Image

  •  519 trees were saved
  •  Greenhouse gases were reduced by 85 metric tons (CO2e)
  •  213,500 gallons of water were recycled

Best Alpha Pillow ImageIf you're kicking yourself for passing up a treasure from the 2010 Streeterville Artisan Market, or if you couldn't make it over to Northwestern University's Lurie Research Center November 19-21, here's another chance: the web sites for participating artists and craftspeople will continue to be linked from the SOAR website, through the end of the year. Safety Tip

Unfortunately, not all people in the world are honest, and it takes only one to ruin a trip out. Whether you're traveling or venturing into a crowded place or event near home, taking a little care to guard your valuables can help to keep your belongings your own.

Be observant.  Avoid dark areas, short-cuts, cul-de-sacs, and suspicious persons. Stay near light and people.

Be prepared to flee potential problems.  If apprehensive about any location for any reason, leave. Consider carrying a whistle.

If followed - On Foot:

  1. Cross the street
  2. Vary your pace
  3. Change direction

Be especially careful when talking on the phone.  Cell phone thefts are on the rise.

Greening Tip

Hurry and Make Those 'Green' Renovations, Tax Credit Expiring Soon

Time is ticking to complete home renovation projects if you want to cash in on a tax deduction that expires at the end of the year. Tax credits are available for home owners who do upgrades that help them save energy and reduce their utility bills such as with more energy-efficient windows and doors, insulation,
and heating and cooling equipment.

Volunteer Opportunities

Get Involved!

There are many ways to become active and engaged in SOAR's efforts in Streeterville.  Volunteers can contribute through one-time efforts, work on special events or projects, assist in the office, or participate on an ongoing basis with SOAR's task forces and committees.  Streeterville residents 18 years or older are invited and encouraged to get involved.  For specific volunteer opportunities, please visit SOAR's website.

Condo Coffee Volunteer

Condo Coffees take place in Streeterville condo buildings on Saturday mornings usually from 9:00-11:00 a.m.  We can always use new faces to help us reach out to residents during the Coffee or to help with set-up and tear-down.

If you would like to help us host a Coffee in your building, let us know.  All we need from you is a contact or an introduction to whomever it is that makes those decisions and we will do the rest.  If you have questions about anything Condo Coffee related, email Sue Graff or call 312.280.2596.

For additional opportunities to make a difference in Streeterville, please volunteer!
