Time for the Streeterville Artisan Market!

Applied Artists and Fine Craftspeople Moving In for the Weekend

Four years ago, when Board member Mary Baim first heard a member suggest that SOAR organize a crafts bazaar to recognize local talent and raise money, she was knee-deep as chair of BLUEPRINTs, the organization's annual fundraising gala. Finishing that up with record-breaking results, she went to work on the new event, co-founding the event now known as the Streeterville Artisan Market, the third edition of which will take place this weekend. "Board members agreed the concept recognized the 'softer side' of SOAR's mission, contrasting with more serious community issues. Baim Necklace Image

As a jewelry designer myself, I was eager to bring in others who shared experience in creating such markets, using 'best practices' from exhibitors' and attendees' viewpoints. We soon realized the difficulty of mounting a substantial show with Streeterville artisans only and decided to make the entire Chicagoland area our universe, with a particular emphasis on artisans from the area.

Among the founders were Irene Newman, Lisa Chizever, and Roberta Kovitz, who continue leadership positions on the committee, celebrating creativity and SOAR.

We've seen the Artisan Market grow from Year One, and look forward to many hundreds of visitors this year." Baim's jewelry, pictured, will be featured along with works by 50 other artisans on Friday (4 - 7:00 p.m.), Saturday (10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.) and Sunday (11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) at Northwestern University's Lurie Research Center, 303 E. Superior.

For a list of exhibitors and photos of their works, visit SAM.

SOAR and its Neighbors Action Task Force will continue to provide you updates on the process and recommendations as they become available.   To view the Urban Land Institutes November 10 report, please visit Navy Pier.

Greening Tip
Save money on gas and give a boost to your health by walking when you only have to go a short distance. It may not sound revolutionary, but it's easy to forget to use ourpicture own two feet in our hectic, car-focused culture.

Walking greatly decreases your carbon footprint, and helps clear the air of smog-forming pollutants. It also is good exercise!

Chicago was ranked by Walk Score as the fourth most walkable city in the United States.  We encourage you to get outside and walk our beautiful city!

This greening tip was brought to you by SOAR's Greening and Sustainability Committee.  If you have a greening tip you would like to share, please submit your tip to greening@soarchicago.org
Volunteer Opportunities

Get Involved!

There are many ways to become active and engaged in SOAR's efforts in Streeterville.  Volunteers can contribute through one-time efforts, work on special events or projects, assist in the office, or participate on an ongoing basis with SOAR's task forces and committees.  Streeterville residents 18 years or older are invited and encouraged to get involved.  For specific volunteer opportunities, please visit SOAR's website.

Streeterville Artisan Market (SAM)
The dynamic SAM team is looking for floaters for two hour shifts to walk around, see if the vendors need anything, and monitor vendor  booths if they need to take a break.  We also need people to act as greeters, sit at the SOAR table at the entrance, hand out flyers and SOAR information.  We could use help with set up on Friday, 11/19 from 2 - 4 p.m., and with closing from 5 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, 11/21.  For more information on how to participate, please contact artisans@soarchicago.org or call 312.280.2596, ext. 3.

Condo Coffee Volunteer

Condo Coffees take place in Streeterville condo buildings on Saturday mornings usually from 9:00-11:00 a.m.  We can always use new faces to help us reach out to residents during the Coffee or to help with set-up and tear-down.

If you would like to help us host a Coffee in your building, let us know.  All we need from you is a contact or an introduction to whomever it is that makes those decisions and we will do the rest.  If you have questions about anything Condo Coffee related, email Sue Graff or call 312.280.2596.

For additional opportunities to make a difference in Streeterville, please volunteer!
