Spiraling Costs of Average

Smart hiring will impact positively on your organization's bottom line performance-but how do you prove it to stakeholders?  Most companies can tell you the cost of a bad hire they terminated on the 89th day, but what they should be analyzing is the cost of an "average" hire they've retained for two years.

Hypothetically, if your company has a turnover of 20% per year and all of your new hires are mediocre-to-average, it will only take 5 years for your entire entire workforce to be average. The cost of a "really bad hire" for a software engineer can exceed a million dollars, for a CEO it could be as much as $1.4 Billion (Ask Quaker Oats for example!).

If you don't recruit and select great people the first time, you won't have great employees. After all, great ideas and products come from people not from equipment, buildings, or capital.  No one purposely hires an average applicant but weak organizational recruitment efforts and less than stellar selection tools will inevitably result in the hiring of average employees. Everyone hires some mediocre-to-average employees but poor recruitment control systems will result in a higher proportion of "average" hires than with the SmartHire system.

What are the "business" impacts of hiring average people?

Employee Referral Program: Get Your Best to Recommend the Rest
Effective organizations look at benchmarking as a tool to force an audit of their own practices
article by Dr. John Sullivan and Master Burnett

As one of the most - if not the most - vocal proponents of employee referral programs, we are constantly monitoring what's going on in leading organizations, what characteristics drive program success, what barriers limit excellence, and what various programs are achieving.

Our vantage point is a privileged one, one we didn't fully understand until we started to look into what benchmarking research actually existed on the topic. Short of whether or not an organization has a program that offers cash incentives and the value of those incentives, very little research exists.

Career Fit Analysis

Historically, SmartHire knows that it is extremely important to allow the candidate to uniformly evaluate their needs in terms of the community, the corporate culture, and the skill sets.

SmartHire Career Fit service evaluates the best match or "fit": a candidate's resume may incorporate all the qualifications required by the position but without taking into account the community "fit", the corporate culture "fit", or the skill set "fit" - we may have a lose-lose.

SmartHire weighs and measures each of these fits relative to the employment opportunity being offered.  This is done to ensure a balanced, objective view of candidates who are seriously considering your opportunity.

SmartHire uses an assigned scoring matrix for each short-listed candidate since this "fit" is a very critical component of successful talent management.
