September is Farm to School Month

Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed September Farm to School Month in Minnesota. The proclamation is in recognition of statewide initiatives to bring more locally grown foods into our schools.

One of those initiatives is the development of a Minnesota Grown online database that makes it easy for schools and other institutions to find local farmers capable of supplying them with locally grown foods. More than 65 farms are already listed in the database with more being added each week.

"The Minnesota Grown Program has more than 1,100 farmer members throughout Minnesota and has been promoting locally grown foods for the past 30 years. So capitalizing on our membership base and experience to create a directory of farmers selling to institutions seemed like a natural idea," according to Paul Hugunin, Local Foods Supervisor at the MDA. "We've designed this online directory to allow institutional buyers to search for farmers not just based on their location and products offered, but they can also sort for farms that carry specific amounts of liability insurance, are GAP certified, and based on whether they deliver directly to the schools or through a distributor."

The online Directory is free for schools and other buyers to use and can be found at www.minnesotagrown.com. Minnesota farmers who sell to schools can list their farm in the new database by becoming a Minnesota Grown member for just $20 per year.

Join MDA on trade mission to Vietnam this fall!

Vietnam is a dynamic emerging economy with growing consumer demand for pork and other protein products - creating unique market prospects for U.S. exporters of feed grains, livestock supplements and genetics.

MDA's 2011 mission to Vietnam will highlight these opportunities for Minnesota companies through one-on-one meetings, visits to feed mills and market briefings in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from November 27th to December 3rd.

Rebate available for organic certifiation costs

MDA Organic Specialist Meg Moynihan is reminding Minnesota organic farmers and processors to apply for a rebate of up to 75 percent of the cost of their organic certification.

"Organic growers and processors who sell more than $5,000 of organic agricultural products are legally required to obtain certification at their own expense which can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per year," says Moynihan. "This cost is unique to organic farms and businesses and can be a financial burden to some of them. I strongly encourage them to apply for this cost-share program."

To qualify, applicants must be certified by a USDA-accredited certifying agency. Certified organic operations are eligible for reimbursement of 75 percent of certification-related costs they incurred during the period between October 1, 2010 and September 30, 2011, up to a maximum of $750 per category of certification (crop, livestock, processing/handling, wild harvest).

Costs incurred after September 30, 2011 are not eligible for the current rebate program, but can be submitted next year. The deadline to apply for the Organic Cost Share Program is October 31, 2011.

The MDA has already mailed application packets to more than 900 certified organic operations in the state. Any certified organic farmer or processor who did not receive a packet can obtain the materials on the MDA's web site www.mda.state.mn.us/organic or by calling 651-201-6012. Along with their cost share applications, organic farmers are invited to supply information about the products they sell for the upcoming edition of the Directory of Minnesota Organic Farms.

Organic

farming profits rise in 2010

MDA has issued a new report showing the profitability of Minnesota organic farms improved in 2010 over the previous year.

The "2010 Organic Farm Performance in Minnesota" report shows improved whole-farm economic performance as well as stronger returns for organic crop and dairy enterprises.

The most profitable organic crop on a per-acre basis was corn, which averaged a net return of $430.36 on owned and rented land.

Organic dairies reported net return per cow of $756.20 in 2010.

The 48-page report contains whole-farm financial summaries as well as data on individual crops and dairy.

MDA developed the 2010 organic farming report with major funding provided by USDA's Risk Management Agency. Financial information was collected from 79 certified organic farmers enrolled in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) farm business managment education programs. The information collected was compiled and analyzed by the UofM Center for Farm Financial Management.
