EAB Field Days

The EAB Field Days will take place as scheduled, rain, shine, or snow.

What: An opportunity to peel EAB infested logs, learn how to visually identify EAB infested standing trees, and ask questions of the experts.

When:  Tuesday, April 19 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where:  SE corner of Tower Hill Park in Minneapolis, near the intersection of Clarence and Seymour.

Original announcement:

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will host emerald ash borer (EAB) field days on April 19 and 20 at Tower Hill Park, Minneapolis. Field day participants will have the opportunity to peel EAB infested trees as well as learn how to visually identify EAB infested standing trees. Tower Hill Park is part of the Twin Cities emerald ash borer infestation and has EAB infested trees that will be removed this spring.

Participants need not register, but can stop-by the park between the hours of 12pm and 4pm on April 19 or 8am and 12pm on April 20. There is no formal program, just an opportunity to get a first-hand look at the signs and symptoms of EAB. Staff from MDA will be present to answer questions. For questions prior to the event, please contact Arrest the Pest at 888-545-6684 or arrest.the.pest@state.mn.us.

Flight Season Countdown
eab emerging from tree
Eric R. Day, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Bugwood.org

There are only a few weeks left till the official start of the flight season!

Initial emergence of EAB adults from trees is anticipated after accumulation of 450 degree days (base 50 degrees Fahrenheit). A degree day is a measure of accumulated heat and in this case provides a means to track how much development time EAB immature stages (within trees) have had.

Degree day accumulations are used to track development of other insects as well, including a common insect in the Midwest - the European corn borer. European corn borer degree days are calculated on the same scale as EAB (base 50 degrees F) and a map for the Minnesota / Wisconsin area is available online at:

http://www.soils.wisc.edu/wimnext/corn/euroborer.html

When an area reaches 450 degree days for European corn borer, then initial EAB flight can also be anticipated.

With the upcoming flight season, be sure to note the ash tree waste disposal site link on the left-hand side.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in Minnesota

stink bugThe brown marmorated stink bug has been found in three metro counties and one southeastern Minnesota county. The bug was first discovered in Minnesota in November, 2010 in Ramsey County. The brown marmorated stink bug moves from warm homes into fields during the spring. This high-activity time of year is a good time to spot the bugs. If the location of these bugs is know, the MDA and partners can better manage the current population. If you think you have seen a brown marmorated stink bug, please contact the arrest the pest hotline to report the finding.
