You Know What June Is...It's Dairy Month!

MilkJune Dairy Month has been celebrated since 1937 and we'd be remiss if we didn't toast a glass of milk today to Minnesota's dairy industry. There are a lot of "wow factors" when you consider the contributions this industry makes to our state. For starters, Minnesota is the nation's 6th largest dairy state. Our state's dairy industry (including both dairy production and processing) has a combined total annual output value of $5.6 billion. Every dollar from dairy production and processing generates about $2 in statewide economic activities.  The dairy industry also supports nearly 40,000 jobs in Minnesota.

MDA economist Su Ye tracks the industry and says there are some recent, positive trends to report.

"While many large dairy states have seen decreases in cow numbers in recent years, Minnesota has seen an increase in cow numbers the past three years after a long period of decline," said Ye.  "Production also went up -Minnesota produced 9 billion pounds of milk in 2009, about a 3 percent increase from 2008.  Dairy exports also achieved remarkable growth in 2009, reaching $191 million - a 69% increase from 2008."

Holstein cowsMilk prices fluctuated wildly from 2000 to 2009, ranging from a low of $10.70/cwt. (July 2002 and March 2003) to a high of $22.10/cwt (December 2007).  But things look to be improving as April milk prices were reported at $15.00/cwt., just above the 10-year average of $14.88/cwt.

Stearns County is the largest dairy county in Minnesota followed by Winona, Morrison, Wabasha and Otter Tail.

Got Ice Cream?  Need Strawberries!
 Icecream
When thinking of summer, who doesn't think of ice cream?  A great reason to have plenty on hand is because Minnesota's strawberry season is right around the corner.  A luscious bowl of ice cream topped with some freshly picked strawberries is a family and crowd pleaser for sure! And many pick-your-own berry farms in the southern and Twin Cities metro areas of the state are now open or will be in the next few days.

The Minnesota Grown Program makes it easy to find a berry patch with 90 listings in the 2010 directory.  Remember to call ahead for hours and directions!

Many Dairy Farmers are Award Winners

The MDA has awarded many Minnesota dairy farmers over the past four years with the Commissioner's Good Farm Neighbor Award.  The award recognizes state livestock producers for excellence in animal care, environmental protection and community involvement.

The most recent winners are Stearns County dairy farmers Sadie and Glen Frericks.  The Frericks, of rural Melrose, run Blue Diamond Dairy, a 70-cow operation. Sadie Frericks says they are very concerned about their herd's health and well-being.

"Glen and I are really 'cow people' and we give them a lot of individual attention," says Frericks. "We know their entire family and life history and I think because we know them so well we can tell when something might be wrong."

In addition to their focus on animal care, Frericks says maintaining a positive public image and protecting the environment are also important to them.  She says they developed a 'good neighbor' policy for their farm in which they listen to concerns people may have and try to mediate the situation.  She says they've also enrolled in the MDA's Livestock Environmental Quality Assurance Program to improve the quality of the water, soil, air and wildlife habitat on their farm.  Hard work and dedication has also earned the Frericks the Five Star Dairy status from the Minnesota Milk Producers Association.

Sadie Frericks says they're concerned about their community and try to stay involved in a variety of ways, including writing a blog titled "The Next Generation" to help young dairy farmers and others learn more about the dairy profession. "When our neighbors see us doing good things in the community, it makes them realize we're interested in the big picture."

Winners of the MDA's Good Farm Neighbor Award are selected by a committee representing the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association and the MDA.

Minnesota is a Great State for Dairy

Minnesota's dairy farmers work hard to produce and promote their high quality products. The MDA also works hard to promote Minnesota as a great place for dairy farming. MDA Livestock Specialist Curt Zimmerman says our quality of life and our climate are two reasons farmers would consider moving or starting a dairy operation here.

Zimmerman says having a variety of transportation options, strategically located processing plants and strong, supportive producer organizations are also benefits for prospective dairy farmers.

Study Finds
Ag Jobs will be Plentiful

Good job market news for college grads!  A new study suggests those with agricultural degrees should find plenty of job opportunities.  The  Purdue University/ USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture study  predicts on average, about 54,400 ag-related jobs will be created every year in the U.S. between 2010 and 2015.

Most of these jobs are expected to be in the areas of food, renewable energy, and the environment.
The study says more employees will be needed to fill these jobs due to shifts in consumer preferences and global markets.
