Firewood Movement Clarification
In an effort to facilitate the movement of heat-treated wood, as certified by the MDA or USDA, the following allowances and requirements apply:
  1. Firewood that is heat-treated in an MDA or USDA certified facility, AND displaying the appropriate certification shield, CAN legally be transported by anyone out of the EAB quarantine
  2. Once heat-treated by an MDA or USDA certified facility, the packaged firewood, or other units secured for transport, must be unopened and have proper labeling clearly visible for inspection.  Firewood bundles that have been opened CANNOT be removed from a quarantined area.
  3. Firewood from a DNR approved vendor, AND is certified as heat-treated, AND displays the appropriate certification shield, CAN legally be brought into any Minnesota State Park or Forest Campground.
  4. Firewood that is NOT certified as heat-treated or fails to display the appropriate certification shield CANNOT be removed from a quarantined county, except as provided for under a current and valid EAB Compliance Agreement with the MDA.

What are those Green Traps?
Joshua Plunkett, MDA
green trap
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is testing some new traps this year in MN. Similar to the purple prism traps currently in use, the USDA has hung 27
green prism traps in the Known EAB Infested Areas in St. Paul and Minneapolis. A portion of the traps have the same lure as the current purple ones, 80:20 manuka:pheobe oils while others have a new lure - z-3 hexenol oil. The new oil is naturally produced by many plants and has a grassy smell that acts as an attractant to predatory insects. It is also used in some perfumes and as a flavoring compound in some fruits and vegetables.
