March Cruelty Case
Our Evangeline Parish Chapter saved this abandoned horse in Mamou.
After receiving veterinary care at her foster home for various conditions,
she was improving, but we received word today that she is down
and is in critical condition.   We're hoping for a miracle.

Last November we contacted you about a serious increase in horse cruelty and neglect cases, and you responded generously.  The calls we receive about starving and abandoned  horses continues to be overwhelming, and we must appeal to your compassion again to help these suffering animals.  We are very grateful to have the funds you give doubled during this matching funds drive.

We will show you some of our current cases and a happy ending for one of the horses in our November appeal.  We have spared you the most graphic pictures of dead and dying horses but the reality of horse abuse witnessed by our investigators is shocking..

Some of the horses in our care:

Mr. Cullen

Mr. Cullen's tattoo led us to find out his history... he raced at Delta Downs
and Louisiana Downs.  He ran in about six races, and when he didn't
perform well enough, he was neglected and eventually seized in a cruelty case.

Pistol
Pistol was almost starved to death.

Misty

Misty, a palomino quarter horse mix, age 2 or 3, was purchased by an HSL

staff  member at the sale barn where she had been awaiting transport to the

slaughterhouse for 2 months..  She was underweight with serious behavioral

issues.  She is very fearful, but we are now working to rehabilitate her.

Minnie 6/11

Minnie (above) was featured in our last appeal to help horses.  She received excellent care and is now thriving as you can see below.   Our thanks to all of you who responded to our last appeal and helped Minnie make such a wonderful recovery.

One of our biggest needs is for pasture land.   We have been offered a free, long-term lease of 10-20 acres but it needs to be cleared and fenced.  If anyone has a bulldozer and could contribute that service, it would be most appreciated.  We need land all around the state.  With our large volunteer network and chapters around Louisiana, pasture land anywhere in the state could be very useful.

Please contact us at 1-888-6 HUMANE or info@humanela.org if you wish to speak with someone about donating any of our large requests.  Gift cards and monetary donations can be sent directly to HSLA, P.O. Box 740321, New Orleans, LA  70174.
