Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

2012 is underway and it's already an exciting and productive year for the Humane Society of Louisiana!  We're so grateful to have you as a partner in our lifesaving work to protect and defend animals in need.  We'll keep you informed about our programs to help abuse and neglect victims statewide in these monthly Paws Cause alerts.

                 2012 Adoption Transports Underway:
23 Animals Sent to Loving Homes

Noah

HSL kicked off 2012 with another successful adoption transport of homeless pets from down South.  Our tireless adoption team drove north to New Hampshire and New Jersey, bringing 20 dogs and 3 cats to loving homes.  Bad weather and a tire blowout delayed the trip a bit, but everyone was delivered safe and sound - just a day late.  Adorable Noah (pictured above) was one of the lucky pups on the trip.  He was delivered to Brittany Spaniel Rescue of New Hampshire, where he will find a friend for life.

Homeless Pup Finds
New Hope at Church

Our members rarely hear about the small success stories that happen each and every day, as we help animals across Louisiana.  Here's one such happy tale:  a starving, disabled puppy was in a desperate situation in Winnsboro recently.  The poor pup, a deaf Dalmatian - Australian sheep dog mix with a damaged eye, was scavenging for food near the New Zion Baptist Church.  Thankfully, Alice Crawford, a member of the congregation, took pity on the little dog and rescued him.  The sickly pup needed medical help, however, and Ms. Crawford - who is on a fixed income - was unable to finance his veterinary care.  HSL intervened to help the puppy, raising funds for his medical treatment through a community appeal in the local newspaper.  The puppy was given the Biblical name Asher, meaning blessed.  He had recovered fully from his ordeal and has been neutered.  Now he is doing just fine!  Thank you for allowing us to reach desperate animals like Asher - one precious life at a time.

Riley and Sidney love to run and
play together at the sanctuary.  Our
homeless animals manage to have a
lot of fun, while they're waiting for
their forever homes.

Push to Ban Live Animal Giveaways
at the Strawberry Festival

It's shocking that some festivals and fairs still give away live animals as "prizes" in carnival games, as if they were stuffed toys.  For years, we've received complaints about the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival vendors handing out rabbits, ducklings and other small creatures to the winners of games of chance.  The inherent problems with this practice are obvious: stressed animals are injured or harmed by unsupervised children; the unwanted animals are relinquished to animal shelters and often euthanized; the poor creatures are taken into homes where they are unwanted and ultimately receive inadequate care.  We are working hard this year to finally put an end to this outdated practice.  UPDATE Thankfully, festival organizers have decided to ban live animal giveaways after 2012.  Sadly, however, one church will be allowed to give out live rabbits as prizes this year.  We are working hard to stop this from moving forward.

Beautiful Chardonnay

Chardonnay evacuated from New Orleans with our Humane Society crew before Katrina destroyed our shelter.  We're on track in 2012 to build new living quarters for the homeless cats, dozens of whom have been in our care for many years.  We'll keep you posted on our progress.  Looking to adopt a special kitty?  Don't forget the wonderful Katrina cats  still living at our sanctuary.  They  are all particularly deserving of loving homes, where they can live out their feline golden years.

Thanks to our friends at Margaritaville for donating their monthly fundraising proceeds to animals in need.  The French Quarter restaurant sells bracelets each month and donates the proceeds to a local charity.

Did you make any New Year's resolutions for 2012?  Are you keeping them?  If keeping fit and healthy is on your "to do" list for the year, have you considered doing it by helping animals, too?

The research is clear: staying healthy and keeping fit goes hand in hand with eating lots of veggies.  Exercising and reducing your consuption of animal products are great way to meet your fitness goals.

If you're interested in exploring a healthy plant-based diet but don't know where to start, there are many local places to get support.  Check out our web site and mark your calendars now for our humane society's exciting annual event:
