Dear Paws Cause Member,
It's been a long, hot summer, and everyone's been working hard to keep cool at the sanctuary. Some of our dogs enjoy cool dips in the pond, while our kitties squeeze in a few extra naps in the sweltering afternoons. The horses, goats and other critters in our care manage to "keep it cool" in the shade. Even our hardworking staff has to slow it down at this time of the year. Meanwhile, HSL investigators deal with the heat in their own way: they're always out in the field, helping animals without access to adequate shelter, shade or water in the extreme temperatures. We're looking forward to the cooler months to come, and we thank you for your consistent support - in every season! |
Cruelty Investigations in Focus at Meeting with NOPD Brass

Our relationship with the New Orleans Police Department has sadly been difficult at times. Clearly, we should be working together to ensure that our state and local anti-cruelty laws are strongly enforced. This month, more than a dozen HSL investigators, case-workers and supporters attended a meeting with five top ranking officers; it was aimed at improving dialogue between our agencies and resolving specific cruelty cases. We discussed a wide range of animal protection issues, including the need for NOPD to institute a dog bite prevention program for its officers. We also proposed that cruelty investigations training be given to all officers as well, and the Department tentatively agreed. We're hoping this is the start of productive dialogue between our two agencies.

Caldwell parish chapter volunteers put on a dog wash fundraiser recently: this pooch might have liked his bath better, if he knew it were for a good cause. |

Six Years After the Storm:
Still Caring for Katrina's Homeless Survivors
It's hard to believe that it's been 6 years since Katrina devastated our shelter, redefining our city and our organization forever. Each August at the storm's anniversary, we reflect on the challenges we've successfully overcome. We also take the opportunity to remind people that we are still traveling the long road to recovery. HSL deals with the impact of the storm each and every day as we continue to care for the 'special needs' survivors of the hurricane. We have 109 'hard to place' Katrina cats and dogs. With your help, we've fed, watered, sheltered and cared for them each and every day for the past 6 years. This was never a program we planned, of course, but we've always felt it our duty to help these special survivors. Thank you for making all their happily-ever-after endings an ongoing reality.
