Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month - a great time to thank you for all you do to help abused and neglected animals across Louisiana.  This month, we're also gearing up for our biggest spring event - The NOLA Veggie Festival, a celebration of cruelty-free foods and farm animal protection.  Hope to see you there!!

Legolas

Isn't our new friend Legolas adorable?  Sadly for others like him around Louisiana, the goat meat industry is expanding in our state.  Just one more reason the NOLA Veggie Fest is out there, teaching people about alternatives to eating animals.  Please join us!  You don't have to be vegetarian or vegan to attend.  Everyone is welcome!  Come learn more about the alternatives and what you can do to fight cruelty to farm animals at the NOLA Veggie Fest!!!

Adoption Transports Ready to Roll

Summer's just around the corner, and we're preparing to take dozens of homeless animals to loving families up north, just in time for them to beat the heat.  HSL will be taking homeless Southern pets to New Jersey, Canada and Maine in the weeks to come.   We'll share pics of some of these lucky animals next month.

Goodness, Gracious......Great Balls of Fur!!

Ferriday is a small town in Concorida Parish - one of many Louisiana communities without a shelter or rescue group.  All that's about to change!  Rock n' Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis hails from the town and his sister, Frankie, is a real animal lover who helps run the local Lewis Family Museum.  She contacted us recently about wanting to help animals in her community.  We'll be heading to Concordia parish in a few weeks to kick off local animal protection efforts.

Spring Means the Veggie Fest is on the Way!!

If you care about farm animals and great food, you won't want to miss our third annual NOLA  Veggie FestCheck out this alert  for details or visit our websiteYou can also follow the NOLA Veggie Fest on Twitter or Facebook to receive the updates.  Want to help but can't attend?  We need silent auction and raffle items to help us raise funds.  Dozens of volunteers are still needed, as well.

Please shop at our store and spread the word to your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Also, whether you're an established Ebay seller or just an animal lover with unwanted items around the house, please name the Humane Society of Louisiana as your charity through the Ebay Giving Works program.  It's a great way you can earn extra cash while helping animals in need!!

Aussie in the leaves

Farewell to our very dear friend...

Aussie was our best canine 'volunteer' ever.  This month we are deeply saddened to say goodbye to her.  Beautiful, smart and fiercely devoted to her best friend, Johnna Harris, she rode shotgun on every pet adoption transport and 'helped out' at countless HSL events.  The pair were inseparable, and we all miss her constant presence.

Cheyenne Memorial

We also say our goodbyes to wonderful Cheyenne this April.  The rescued filly was also much loved by our Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, who did everything medically and humanly possible to save her life.
