Heartbreaking Cruelty Case Shows Brutality of Dog Fighting:

Tough Action Needed Against Blood Sports in 2011

The tragic story of a tormented dog - who was almost certainly used as a 'bait' dog by New Orleans area fighters - broke the hearts of local animal lovers this month. While dog fighting is synonymous with cruelty, the heinous injuries inflicted upon this particular dog were truly outrageous.  When local rescuer Phylisha Soleto found the innocent victim in New Orleans East, one of his feet was completely severed; his body was covered in bites and cuts. All of his teeth had been manually removed, and his jaw was dislocated from his face. The vet had no choice but to humanely euthanize the poor animal.  HSL offered a reward in the case and got the word out in the local media, in an attempt to get witnesses to come forward.  We also began mobilizing volunteers to pass out leaflets in neighborhoods where fighting is widely reported.  As we hope for new leads in this shocking case, we plan to initiate new anti-dog fighting strategies this year. The investigation of dog fighting has always been a core part of our organization's anti-cruelty work, and we are committed to building new alliances and strategies to combat this abuse.  Click here to see the coverage on WVUE television.

Chico and Amber

Nothing makes our day like catching up with our 'adopted alumni', who now enjoy the good life in happy, loving homes.  As such, we were delighted to get this picture from animal rescuer extraordinaire, Melanie Manning, who just happened to run into Chico and Amber taking their afternoon stroll. Thank you for making happy endings like these possible!!

Helping Horses Across Rural Louisiana

Did you know our office receives disturbing reports of starving and neglected horses virtually every day?  Our charity investigators work hard with officials and agencies around the state to bring aid to these animals, but we need to mobilize more volunteers and resources to meet the growing demand for our services.  If you are a 'horse person' able to volunteer, or if you have resources, contacts or equipment we can use to respond more effectively in such cases, please contact us, as we work to expand our network. We'll keep you updated on our efforts to help these all too often neglected animals in the weeks to come.

St. James Chapter
HSL's Jeff Dorson (R) met with animal lovers in St. James parish this month to form a local
humane society chapter. We admire these volunteers for their commitment to helping needy animals in St. James parish, and we look forward to working with them in 2011.  Initial chapter goals include: providing spay and neuter services, drafting parish animal control/protection ordinances, and creating an adoption and foster care program.

On behalf of all the animals in our care,
thank you for your continuing support!
