Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,
Thank
you as always for your generous support and for keeping our wonderful
programs for animals in operation! We apologize for the delay in
getting this alert to you, but our small family of staff and volunteers
suffered a tremendous loss. Paul Nesbitt, beloved husband of our Board
President, Dana Nesbitt, suffered a sudden heart attack and died at the
age of only 46. Dana has written every Paws Cause alert for more
than 20 years, but was understandably unable to finish this one. Stay
tuned for more news about some of our recent program developments in our
next issue!

Taking on Cruelty Around the
State
Ever
wonder how HSL is able to fight cruelty around Louisiana, working primarily
with volunteers on such a small budget? Our group relies on more
than one dozen volunteer investigators from around the state; they
travel to scenes where animal abuse and neglect have been reported and conduct their investigations. We're always looking for ways
to improve and expand our cruelty investigation and prevention services
to reach more animals in need. For example, due to the increased number
of complaints involving horses and livestock, we recently teamed up
with Dr. Amy Cangelosi, an equine veterinarian, who led an investigation
workshop for law enforcement and humane investigators. Attendees
learned how to properly care for and house horses and look for tale-tell
signs of mistreatment. Dr. Cangelosi is also helping our investigators
monitor a case involving the alleged neglect of a mare and her colt in
St. Bernard Parish. To help upgrade our complaint tracking system, Beau
Gast, a seasoned investigator with post-certified training, developed a
cruelty tracking program that will help our investigators better store
and preserve important data for each complaint. Our
state's neediest animals deserve no less. Nor is our investigative work confined to the New Orleans metropolitan area. Janet Lyons, a resident
of Crowley, Louisiana, is a one-woman dynamo. Janet is out in the field
virtually every day, responding to complaints in a tri-parish area. A
Lafayette TV station recently covered some of Janet's work in the field.
Recently, we've also been working with detectives in New Iberia,
regarding the suspected abuse of a family pet. We are seeking custody
of the young dog and will keep you abreast of developments in this
case. |
In Memory of Paul Nesbitt
Paul Nesbitt with his wife, Dana, and their dog, Pie Man, at the HSL
Walk Against Cruelty 2003.Quietly
and without fanfare, Paul Nesbitt was one of the Humane Society of
Louisiana's key volunteers for more than a decade. An accomplished
English musician, composer and freelance journalist, he supported and
worked with his wife, HSL President, Dana Nesbitt, to help animals in
every capacity. Whether caring for countless foster animals, providing
housing for volunteers, or helping hands-on with disaster relief, Paul
was always there to lend a hand. An ethical vegetarian for more than 20
years, the cruelty of factory farming was a chief concern to Paul. He
had a special fondness for pigs and for his rescued dogs, Georgie Girl,
Pie Man, Dino & Cowboy. Paul designed brochures; wrote press
releases; handled computer and IT problems; produced public service
announcements; evacuated animals before hurricanes; rose before sunrise
to set up special events; transported animals to adoption days; hauled
merchandise to the HSL thrift store, and hosted many fundraisers at the
Nesbitt home. Also, it was only through his hard work and kindness that
his wife was able to devote herself to full time animal activism and
volunteerism for many years. For his selflessness, his intellect, his
kindness, his optimism and his good humor, Paul was truly an unsung
hero for Louisiana's animals, and he will be profoundly missed.

Best
Wishes for a Speedy Recovery, Beth!
Best wishes go out to HSL's
Beth Zilbert, the President of our Southwest Chapter, who is also a
dynamic attorney who practices law in Lake Charles. Beth was recently
involved in a serious traffic accident and is recovering from her
injuries. Beth, we are thinking of you. We wish you a fast recovery
and a quick return to your loved ones and to your important work for
animals.

Happy
Tails from our Recent Adoption Transport! We love getting updates and pictures from recent adopters about how
their new family members are getting along, so we thought we'd share a couple with you!
 HAPPY ENDING FOR COURTNEY
"Things are
going great! Johnna was right, we were best friends on the ride home. We
stopped at the Kennel Shop on the way home and brought her in to pick
out some toys and things. She loved it. She is doing really well with
the kids. She is playing with them and not as skittish around them...." HAPPY ENDING FOR OLA "We took Ola to camp for the first time this
past weekend, and she loved it. She stayed around us all the time so
we didn't have to keep her on a leash, so she loved the freedom. She
was afraid of the dock and the lake at first, but, as you can see from
the pictures, she was so curious she finally went wading in. She had fun
chasing bubbles and stuff that falls off the trees into the water. The
water was around 50 degrees, but it didn't seem to bother her...."Our tireless Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, is leaving this weekend on another transport to the Northeast, and we will soon have even more happy endings to tell you about!
