Dear Paws Cause Member,
There's much good news to report from the early months of 2010! (We apologize for being a bit late in reporting it!) Unfortunately, this January, our Vice President and Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, had to undergo emergency surgery. Thanks to all of you for well wishes on her behalf. Johnna reports that she is now feeling better, and we wish her a speedy and full recovery.
Very special thanks go out to Bill and Nancy Lee of the Buddy Lee Foundation for their incredible generosity |

HSL Adoption Team Starts the Year on a Roll!
It says a lot about Johnna that she made sure to complete a cross-country adoption transport in early January, just days before checking into the hospital. Just a few weeks prior, the adoption transports and Johnna were profiled in the December issue of Cesar's Way magazine - a new publication from TV's "Dog Whisperer". Thanks also go out to Animal Care Worker, Jessica Cameron, and volunteer, Jennifer Rowan, for their sleepless nights spent moving doggies cross country in the snow. On this year's first transport, HSL was pleased to be able to make 20 'happy endings' possible. Homes were found for Juliet and her family of 9 puppies, who were recently discovered living as one happy family with 'dad' in an abandoned house; 'Romeo' will head up on our next trip, as he was initially too sick to travel. Other lucky pooches include Teddy, a long haired black and brown dog, who was lost on the highway and black lab Jenny, who was abandoned in a grocery store parking lot. Madison, pictured above, will be one happy pit bull when she also heads to a new home on our next trip!

Outreach & Volunteerism in 2010 HSL was a real presence in the community last year, tabling at events and activities and speaking up for animals all around town. This year, we'll participate in more local outreach events, and we'll offer more opportunities for volunteers to get involved. We're pleased to announce that Dionne Charlet is our new Outreach Coordinator. She'll be managing our community events and volunteer programs in 2010. We're now form committees for events, such as our gala, a "Chew Dat" TAILgate party marking the 5th anniversary of Katrina, as well as a dog walk planned for the fall. There are opportunities to work from home, as well. To learn more, contact Dionne at dionne@humanela.org.

Gimme Shelter! Dog House Drive Underway Very special thanks go out to the Rotary Club of Algiers for their generous grant of $2000 for dog houses at Tylertown. Many of our resident canines are pleased to be starting the year out in their cozy new digs! The Petco Foundation has donated 5 large igloo dog houses to HSL as part of the drive, as well. In addition to 30 new houses needed to replace more of the well-worn houses at our Tylertown facility, we're working hard to get 20 houses donated to help dogs in urgent need at the substandard Napoleonville pound. HSL has been working to improve conditions at that facility for years, and the unfortunate dogs at the pound there have never had any shelter from the elements. If your club or business can sponsor a dog house, let us know!

HAPPY ENDING IN PONCHATOULA:
This poor kitty was the victim of a violent blow to the head in a local trailer park, which led to the loss of his eyesight in one eye. Sadly, witnesses would not come forward in the case to testify. HSL stepped in to treat his serious injury, neuter him and find him a loving new home. Some of your Paws Cause contributions will go towards his vet bills and other emergency HSL vet care costs. He is now living with his new mom Brittany Grice pictured below.

Thelma and Louise had a miserable life on a factory farm but are safe now with HSL. They'll be getting a cool new coop, along with 12 formerly neglected hens and roosters.
