Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

You've generously played 'Santa Claws' for Louisiana's needy animals all year long, and we can't thank you enough!  Simply put: your kindness saves lives and makes our work possible. We hope that you and your loved ones enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and that you're looking forward to an extraordinary new year.

Scout in the Snow

Scout examines the freshly fallen snow on his dog bed, as Doc takes in the scene.  The miserably cold recent conditions underscore our urgent need to build indoor-outdoor kennels for dogs near our spacious play yards.  Raising construction funds for puppy runs through our Paws to Rebuild campaign is a key HSL goal for the coming year.

Looking Ahead: Working Hard for Animals in 2010

We have much to be thankful for and look forward to in the months ahead: we have more trained HSL investigators in the field than ever before, defending animals from cruelty and neglect; our team of dedicated volunteers and tireless crew are reaching a growing number of animals in distress; the NOLA Veggie Fest will be held on May 16th, and this year's event promoting cruelty-free lifestyles promises to be bigger and better than ever; we're stepping up lobbying efforts in 2010 to keep our local elected officials focused on animal protection concerns; we're actively promoting the 'Animal Friendly' license plate to fight pet overpopulation statewide; we're spearheading reforms at public shelters and helping to bring lifesaving services to animals in need in rural communities. To better communicate these and other positive developments this year, we're reviving Animal Tracks, our informative quarterly newsletter, to bring you more in depth information about our programs and accomplishments. Of course, there are always challenges ahead for a grassroots group like HSL, and that's why the generous support of Paws Cause members like you is so important. We were recently very disappointed to learn, for example, that we won't be receiving an anticipated $20,000 operating grant, which we've been counting on each year since Katrina.  With so many lifesaving programs on the line, it's more important than ever for us to increase our Paws Cause membership.  If you can help by telling family members and friends about our work and encouraging them to join, we'd deeply appreciate your support, as we gear up for an incredibly productive 2010!

Christmas Walk 2009

Pooches and their people turned out in their festive best
for the first annual Christmas Dog Walk and Pub Crawl
in Algiers.  Proceeds benefited HSL.  Planners are excited
about making this event a NOLA holiday tradition to help
animals in need.

Pennies for Paws:  Compassion Makes Cents!

HSL kicked off a campaign on December 11th to help make positive 'change' for animals in need.  In keeping with the holiday spirit, generous students from the Little School at St. Martin's Episcopal gathered in the courtyard of the Ritz Carlton Hotel and donated stockings of coins to help animals in need.  We're calling on other kids and animal lovers around Louisiana to follow their compassionate example!  The coin collection drive will run through January 31st.  Our friends at First Bank & Trust are the lead sponsors of the campaign, with 'doghouse' collection boxes now out on display at their 17 branches. Banks can also be found at Mackie Shilstone's GNC stores and at selected PJ's coffeehouses.  New York 'pet lifestyle' expert, TV personality, and Animal Fair magazine editor, Wendy Diamond, is Honorary Chair of the campaign.  Diamond has been called "The Martha Stewart of the milk and bone dish" (The New Yorker), dubbed the "Pet Diva" (New York Post), and crowned the "Canine Queen" (Forbes Magazine). She's also a frequent pet lifestyle contributor to NBC's Today Show. "The 'Pennies For Paws' campaign will make sure that every single piggy bank penny donated by caring school children will go towards providing excellent medical care and housing for the survivors of Katrina," says Diamond.

Safe with us for the Holidays!

Bianca and Orion               Benjamin

Blanca thinks Orion is such a good boy, he deserves a pat on the head!
HSL's 'adoption elves' loaded up Benjamin (top right) on a 'sleigh ride' to an
East Coast home this season!

Coco                Sophie

Luckily, Santa thought Coco was 'always nice' and never naughty this Christmas!

Lovely Sophie (center right) has such a shy, sweet and affectionate disposition.
We're so sorry she was homeless for the holidays, but at least she'll have treats,
good meals and a safe place to rest her head, while awaiting her special someone.

Pandora

Halloween may be Pandora's favorite holiday, but she gratefully
accepted the holiday goodies made possible by Paws Cause members.
