Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

We're always delighted when summer winds to a close; we're all looking forward to the cooler days in Tylertown, when play time is so much more fun for resident cats, dogs, horses, bunnies, ferrets and birds!  This fall, we're particularly excited about reviving our gala this November 21st!  You'll find more information about the first annual "Fur Ball" in this alert.  We hope to get to mix and mingle with you, so we can 'thank you' in person for all you've done to help us throughout the year.

Paws-itive Steps on Pet Overpopulation

At long last!  Shelters, humane groups, rescuers, elected officials and caring citizens are all buzzing about getting the New Orleans area on a track towards becoming a no-kill community.  The issue has been all over the news, and it seems consensus may finally be growing for all parties to move forward proactively together on behalf of the homeless cats and dogs of our area.  HSL is part of the NOLA No-Kill Task Force that has recently formed to help accomplish this goal.  We'll keep you updated on all these exciting developments. In related news, HSL representatives will be heading up to Baton Rouge in a few days for a meeting of the Louisiana Pet Overpopulation Council.   We'll discuss the first round of grants from our state's 'Animal Friendly' license plate.  Other states have successfully raised hundreds of thousands of dollars statewide for low cost pet sterilizations, and there's no reason we can't do the same here in Louisiana.  Of course, generating that level of funding will be key to achieving no-kill communities around Louisiana.  In the next few weeks, we will unveil a new web site promoting the plate, as we begin a real statewide promotional push to boost vanity plate sales and publicize this important program.  We are looking for volunteers willing to assist with this project, as well.  Helpers could work from home or by participating in community outreach events anywhere in Louisiana.  If you have the time and the ability to help - and if this is an issue that's close to your heart - please get in touch.  We could really use some more hands on deck!

Congratulations

to our Magnolia Chapter!

The group just received an $8800 grant from PetSmart Charities to provide pet sterilizations.

Good work, Johnna and Jessica!

The Shelter Project

Sadly, HSL receives a seemingly endless stream of reports about animal neglect and mistreatment in Louisiana's backwoods rural pounds.  You may have recently received our email outlining our Vermilion parish campaign to shut down their inhumane gas chamber and to institute other common sense reforms.  You can link HERE to read the report and contact area officials on behalf of the homeless cats and dogs who go to this shelter to die.  Just in the past several weeks, our Executive Director, Jeff Dorson, has also been particularly busy following up on complaints and inquiries on behalf of impounded cats and dogs.   He's written a letter of support to the St. Mary Parish President and council members, as part of an effort to help secure a new shelter building.   He's been in contact with the Mayor of Bunkie, a pound where we have documented extremely poor conditions for years; community volunteers voiced serious concerns to us about the mistreatment of animals by the warden.   Dorson has also been communicating with the Mayors of Jonesboro and Crowley, as well as to the Acadia parish President - and now Council members.   The President has thus far refused to follow up with us, regarding the investigation report we filed with him this summer.  There are serious problems at the rural Acadia pound, where yet another 'kill chamber' is in use; we are urging officials to discontinue it.   Staff members also reported to us that there have been 10 break-ins at the facility during the last few years, when pit bulls were stolen.

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUISIANA GALA IS BACK!

Saturday, November 21st

The Fur Ball will be a fun and funky celebration, where cool cats and chicks will unleash their compassion for animals. We'll party alongside the scenic Mississippi River at the Port Authority's Reception Hall on a Saturday night!

The dress code will be 'festive wear or costume' so tails won't be required; guests will be welcome to wag one, though--or sport their coolest animal ears, whiskers, masks or luxurious faux fur.  Real fur only looks great on it's original owner, of course.

Don't have a thing to wear to this fling?  An animal print dress, animal themed tie or accessory would make a real splash; face painters will be on hand, too, to help you unleash your inner party animal. Simply put on your festive best and join the stampede!

Don't miss the celebration at the Humane Society of Louisiana's first annual Fur Ball.  We're looking forward to a fabulous night of riverside romance, celebrating the magic and beauty of animals under the stars. Hope to see you there!
