IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED!

HELP FIGHT PET OVERPOPULATION

IN NEW ORLEANS!

There's never been a better dialogue about ending pet overpopulation in the New Orleans metro area.   People are increasingly unwilling to tolerate the preventable killings of homeless cats and dogs on our streets and in our shelters.

An ordinance proposed by New Orleans Council member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell would be a good first legislative step towards combating our local pet overpopulation problem.  The ordinance would require all dogs in Orleans Parish to be spayed or neutered, unless the owner applies for and receives a breeder's permit.  While we would have liked to see cats included in the language of the bill, this ordinance takes needed action to help curb dog breeding.

Please contact your Council member today in support of the ordinance and encourage friends and family members to do the same.  URGENT action is needed, as the Council will meet on this issue this Thursday, October 1st.

Opponents of this ordinance are mobilizing, and it's important that the council hears from us!  Contact us by calling 1-888-6 HUMANE or email us at info@humanela.org if you are interested in attending the Council meeting on Thursday at 10am.

OCTOBER 1st DEADLINE
:  HELP STOP CRUEL PRACTICE OF HUNTING WITH DOGS IN

THE KISATCHIE NATIONAL FOREST

Hunting Dog

All too often they are left in the woods to suffer and die.

Deer are the obvious and most unfortunate victims of hunting with dogs, but the animals used for hunting often suffer terribly, as well.  You may have seen these poor animals yourself--emaciated beagles and hounds wandering on rural highways, on roads too often lined with the dead bodies of forgotten 'hunting' dogs.

At our Dixieland Center we come across these poor dogs all the time.  They often suffer and starve or meet violent ends in accidents or shootings.  Because they are bred and used for 'sport' they are often housed in squalid conditions and fall victim to neglect and cruelty.

Right now and until October 1st, officials with the Kisatchie National Forest between Alexandria and Shreveport are considering a proposal to end deer hunting with dogs.  Citizen input on this issue has been requested by the Forest supervisors.  Please take a few moments to email (or phone) the following people:

Michael Balboni
Forest Supervisor

Jim Caldwell
Regional Forester

jcaldwell@fs.fed.us

and a copy to:

Shantell Slaughter
Visitor Services Information Assistant
shantelleslaughter@fs.fed.us

SAMPLE LETTER (please personalize):

Dear Mr. Balboni & Mr Caldwell,

Dog-assisted hunting can entail needless suffering in deer and dogs and problems for people living near the forest.  For these reasons, I support  immediate termination of present policy permitting hunters to use dogs to hunt on the Kisatchie National Forest.
