Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

This month, HSL received a welcome donation of a generator through a Petfinder.com grant program.  Now that we're in the heart of hurricane season, we're grateful this gift will help make us all the more prepared!  Have you finalized your hurricane evacuation plans, which include your animal companions? Do you have friends or neighbors - particularly elderly people or those without transportation - who may be unprepared? In the event of future storms, public shelters and evacuation buses will be available for people with animals; we remain concerned, however, that some people, particularly those with multiple pets, may not be ready to take advantage of the program.  If you know of anyone needing assistance with making preparations - before a hurricane puts them in harm's way - please do what you can to help or have them contact us, so we can review their options. Let's work together to ensure that animals and their people are never left behind again!

Tiki Smiling
Our cool Pomeranian pal, Tiki, has a pretty sweet life for a homeless pooch, but we'd SO like for him to find a place of his own! A senior lap dog who was saved from euthanasia, this sensitive and affectionate little guy's life was spared because of a caring sponsor who stepped in at the last moment.

Tiki, who almost certainly spent a lifetime with a family, doesn't like the 'indignity' of ever having to spend time in a comfy crate. So, he's hanging out with our Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, almost nonstop! It's not that Johnna doesn't love having Tiki as a constant (REALLY constant) companion, but she knows he'd be happiest in a home without so many other 'pesky' animals! (The truth is, though, Tiki will happily tolerate other critters - even cats!) If anyone is looking to adopt an extra-special lap dog, who just wants a cozy home, please contact us! In return, he'll worship the ground you walk on!

The '
Emily Events'
Help for Abused and Neglected Animals

     Emily 2
HSL is hard at work helping victims of animal abuse and neglect this summer, with a series of New Orleans fundraisers and activities called 'The Emily Events'. Designed to raise urgently needed funds for and awareness of our cruelty investigation and prevention programs, the events take their name from Emily, the very sweet, severely neglected dog pictured here. Her former owners have been charged with cruelty in St. John parish, and we are monitoring her case through the court system. St. John parish animal control workers contacted us about Emily's plight, and we agreed to take custody of her, to give her the second chance at life she so richly deserves. Lovely Emily is just one face among countless thousands, who suffer and die each year, unseen and unheard-the victims of neglect, cruelty and abandonment.  With your help, we can reach more of them and save these precious lives. Please support the 'Emily events' and the businesses who are taking up our cause!
