Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member,

As thoughts turn to vacation and fun in the sun, we're SO glad we can count on our Paws Cause members to keep Louisiana's defenseless animals in mind!  This summer, your contributions will keep our investigators on the road, our adoption programs in operation, and more than 300 food bowls filled for hungry animals each day.  Won't you help us spread the word about our "Paws Cause" monthly pledge club this summer?  We're busy writing grants for needed building and shelter projects, but it's our Paws Cause members, who keep our programs running from day to day.  With more members and more support, we can save more lives.  It's that simple!  If you think you know someone who might like to join us, please forward this alert to them.  We hope you have a wonderful summer!

Winky, June Carter & Johnny Cash

It looks like ferret friends Winky, June Carter and
Johnny Cash
have fallen into a "burning ring" of...fur.

No, it's not exactly rough life around here.  And they're
not the only little critters living a comfy, cozy existence
here alongside Tylertown's resident dogs and cats.  We
have recently rescued neglected bunnies, chickens,
and a chinchilla.  A neglected colt will soon join
the happy menagerie, too
.

The Long Road to Happy Endings...

Here's the great news:  our shelter partners in Maine and New Hampshire literally can't get enough of our wonderful Southern dogs!  There is an incredible demand for our pups in these northern states, where pet overpopulation has been significantly curbed through responsible spaying and neutering.  Taking animals out of the New Orleans metro area helps our overcrowded public shelters, too, by giving local homeless animals a better chance of finding families here at home.  Here's the sad and frustrating part, though:  it's not a lack of available homes, which keeps us from saving even more adoptable dogs in Louisiana--it's solely a question of funding.  With increased contributions for operating support, HSL could keep adoption transports on the road virtually nonstop.

According to our northern shelter partners, they could take at least four times as many homeless animals from us as we are currently able to provide on our budget.  And there are undoubtedly other northern shelters who could receive and adopt our animals, as well.  Funding is needed for us to cover the initial vet bills and animal care costs during the quarantine period, as well as the actual transport costs.  Individual animals need sponsors as well; for example, many otherwise highly adoptable shelter pets are never made available for adoption, because they have heartworms or some other easily treatable condition.  Whenever we're able to give them the care they need, it's possible for us to prevent these animals from being needlessly destroyed.  We're busy creating new sponsorship programs, networking with donors and other shelter partners to expand our transport program to same more homeless dogs, as quickly as we can.  We really appreciate your support this month, as we prepare to hit the road again soon.

Our adoption partners can even take some adoptable kittens.
Annie and Sable will be among the first to go north with us!

Foster Homes Needed!!

We have many wonderful animals at Tylertown, who are perfect candidates for loving foster homes.  Animals who previously lived in homes, for example, would thrive with one-on-one care, while they await that permanent new family.  Many are simply waiting here at Tylertown, until they can go on a transport up north or recover from medical procedures.  So, an HSL foster care volunteer never has to worry about feeling pressured in any way to provide a permanent place for a homeless cat or dog.  So, if you have a little room in your heart and your home to make a new friend--and make an animal's adjustment to a new life even more pleasant--please contact us today about our foster care program or fill out a volunteer application online.

-Dandy

Dandy is an older house-trained lap dog, who would be SO much happier
in a foster home than hanging around with the "big dogs" at our facility.
You couldn't find a sweeter new buddy to have a short term "fling" with.

Other candidates needing foster care are Bentley, a "foreclosure' cat, who is waiting
for his Mom to set up a new place for him; Brody, a gorgeous retriever mix
recovering from surgery and many, many others.

Emily

HSL stepped in to help rescuers on the Westbank, who were desperately trying to save the life of a homeless dog named Emily.  The poor dog had been spotted running near a drainage canal and darting into a drainage pipe, where rescuers had been trying to capture her for weeks.  After repeated attempts to entice Emily into a humane trap had failed, the rescuers worked with Jefferson animal control to capture the injured two year old pit bull.  Help did not come a moment too soon, apparently.  She was finally located with serious injuries, including a broken front leg and a back leg which had been pulled from his socket.  She also had a skin rash and infections, and her wounds had already become infested with fire ants.  The veterinarians at Companion Animal Hospital surmised that she had most likely been recently hit by a car.  Thanks to caring people like you and the rescuers who worked to save her, Emily will not die an excruciating, lonely death alone but will have every opportunity for finding the loving home she deserves, after she recovers from her injuries.

NOLA Veggie Fest...a tremendous success!

We're delighted that our revived NOLA Veggie Fest on May 17th was the most well attended
outreach and educational event in HSL history! More than 500 people turning up on the day--in the driving rain--to learn more about veggie friendly foods, compassion for farm animals, and the impact
of animal products on the environment and on our health. We're already making plans for next
year's expanded event and will keep you informed. Our very special thanks go out to new Paws Cause member, Dr. Leslie Brown, Event Coordinator, and to Jehan Strousse, who assisting Leslie
and coordinated food donations. Both Leslie and Jehan helped us get the word out in the local
media, too, with an appearance on the WWL Morning Show and an interview with the editor
of the 'Food' section of the Times Picayune, who covered the fest and discussed vegetarianism.

Thanks to all our volunteers and well done, everyone!
