Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause member:

We've been delighted by the outpouring of interest in the upcoming NOLA Veggie Fest. Don't miss out!  On Sunday, May 17th at Cafe Bamboo, 435 Esplanade in the French Quarter, guests will enjoy delicious vegan products, watch speakers and cooking demos, and just have fun hanging out with other folks who care about our friends on the farm.  The event starts at 11 and continues until 6. Admission is only $5.  Find out more about the schedule of events at www.nolaveggiefest.com. We're already looking forward to expanding next year's fest, to reach out to the growing numbers of people who are interested in exploring alternatives to animal products.

Injured Sea Gull

HSL stepped in to help a ringed bill sea gull in Kenner, who we named Skipper. He was found suffering with a broken wing in the Joe Yenni canal. John Schmitt, who is licensed by the state to handle injured wildlife, concluded the poor bird had probably flown into a wire before rescuing him and delivering him to the Clearwater Wildlife Sanctuary to recover.

Fighting Back: HSL Responds to Cruelty and Neglect

Last month, we told you about the rising number of abuse cases HSL has been responding to in the Tangiphoa and Livingston areas. Sadly, the general trend has continued in recent weeks, as we've being dealing with a growing cruelty caseload from around the state.  From dog and cat poisonings to scores of horse starvation cases, we have been working hard to keep up with the reports. With your support, we've been making a difference by investigating complaints, issuing rewards and getting relief to animals in distress. As we continue to form additional rural volunteer chapters, one recently in Jefferson Davis parish and one planned for Evangeline parish, in the heart of Cajun country, the increase in reports is likely to increase, particularly in this economic downturn. To better respond, we're happy to have recruited two more licensed private investigators to join our team, Carol Lynch and Erica Hirsch.  Carney Anne Chester, a former city prosecutor for the city of Houston, has been assisting with legal aspects of our cases, as well.  We've also been working closely with Lori Wilson of Rescue Ranch on equine cases.

To help HSL meet the mounting costs of responding to more calls for help, we recently initiated an emergency fundraising campaign to raise $10,000.00 for additional vet bills and investigative costs. Thanks to the donations and pledges of generous supporters like you, we've already raised $6,069.00. of our goal.  Please let other animal lovers know about our drive, and if you are in a position to help, please pitch in a little extra to help us defend the animals who are relying on us this month.

On Saturday, May 16th, the Humane Society of Louisiana and Rescue Ranch, an equine sanctuary and rehabilitation center, will be hosting an Equine Education Workshop and Open House, at 10913 Hwy 23, Belle Chasse, from 11 am to 2 pm.  Please visit the Events section of our website for more information.

Support Needed for Important Anti-Cruelty Bill

We're pleased that a tough anti-cruelty bill has been introduced this legislative session by longtime Paws Cause member, Representative Tony Ligi.  Please contact your legislators to support this bill!  HB 90 calls for tougher penalties for animal abuse, increasing potential fines and jail terms. It also requires judges to ban perpetrators of aggravated abuse from owning animals for an appropriate period, as determined by the court; it further enables judges to require convicted animal abusers to undergo psychological or anger management counseling. Also, in cases of abuse involving multiple animals, the bill clarifies that each animal involved in such cases constitutes a separate count of abuse. You can track the progress of this and other bills and learn how to contact your state legislators online at www.legis.state.la.us.

Happy Tails from Tylertown

The Littles

Animals come to Tylertown for lots of reasons, but they don't often take the admissions
process into their own.....paws.  One family of pups, however, 'The Littles', as we named
them, did just that.  Most likely abandoned in the nearby woods, the frightened pooches
showed up repeatedly at our gate but ran away from our crew.  The night we captured
three of the pups, however, the others hatched a successful plan to burrow under our fence
in the night to join the rest of their crew.  Together again, Bridget, Buster, Bianca,
Bojangles and Beatrice, from left to right, welcomed 'Dad' Benjamin, when he finally
decided to join the family by coming through the front gate a few days later.

                                  Cassie                                                       Minnie Lynn

Cassie would have lost her life had HSL not intervened to give her the love and training
she needs. Adopted from a shelter as a pup, she was returned with many behavioral
problems and would have been destroyed. We're sure this gal has a good life ahead of her,
once we give her the lifesaving training she needs.  Cute Minnie Lynn and her brother
Meko were recently adopted on our recent transport.

Cherokee

Cherokee was saved from euthanasia at a local animal shelter
by a caring sponsor, who intervened to save his life.

Sophie and Kittens

Sophie and her kittens recently
traveled north for adoption!

Ssssh.... can you keep a secret?
Dodie

Lovely Dodie was recently selected to represent the Humane Society of Louisiana on one of America's favorite national daytime talk shows!

We're hoping this exposure will help us find loving homes for many of our adult 'Katrina' cats.

On behalf of all the animals in our care,
thank you for your continuing support!
