Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause member:

We can always rely on the generosity of our Paws Cause members to get us through the difficult winter months; your kindness is particularly welcome in this chilly economic climate!  We are particularly grateful to Joan Heck, who generously stepped up as our 'guardian angel' last month, donating the urgently needed heating system for our animal transport van, which we mentioned in our last alert.  Special thanks also go out to Marilyn Barnett, Rose Travers, Joey Favaloro, Holly Reynolds, Judy Newman, Donna Gibson and Jim Stone this month--for their extra special support.

Tara Lovely Tara is one of the 125 Katrina survivors you help us care for each month through our Katrina Survivors Sanctuary program at Tylertown.  Tara was previously placed in a home but was sadly returned to us, because of behavioral issues that could not be resolved.  We're working hard to ensure she will finally find the right loving family.  There are many building projects planned to take place at Tylertown soon, all aimed at making life better for Tara and her friends.  With your support, construction workers will soon begin to make needed additions.  Our plans to set up a vet clinic on site are already underway, as well.

Fighting Cruelty and Abuse:  Our Work Around the State

We congratulate our Tangipahoa chapter for branching out as an independent local charity. Last year, our Tangi volunteers investigated more than 100 cruelty incidents--winning 13 court cases, with another 9 cases still awaiting trial.  They also rescued 124 animals and provided sterilizations to 151 pets.  HSL continues to work closely with our partners in Tangipahoa on a number of active cruelty investigations. Well done, guys!

Our Southwest chapter (in Lake Charles) recently held a successful Campaign for a Cruelty Free Calcasieu Interagency Anti-Violence Workshop, providing information and networking opportunities for many social service, cruelty prevention and law enforcement agencies in the parish.

A friendly mixed breed named Bullet, now more appropriately nicknamed 'Bulletproof,' was senselessly shot in the head and rib cage, as he peacefully slept in his family's yard.  In an absolutely miraculous ending to this sad tale, he survived this vicious attack and overcame his injuries.  The alleged perpetrator, Donald Sullivan, Jr., has been charged with cruelty, illegally discharging a firearm, and simple battery--for engaging in a fight with the dog's justifiably outraged guardian after the crime.  As always, HSL will monitor this case closely through the court system to fight for the toughest penalties.

HSL has recently offered two rewards, both in the case of a tragic antifreeze poisoning in Eunice that claimed the lives of three beloved dogs, and in a heartbreaking case of cat killings in Belle Chasse.  The cats, who were the only two trusting, friendly animals in a colony of ferals cared for by the Plaquemines Cat Action Team, were shot at point blank range by their killers.  We are urging witnesses to come forward, and have used the media attention in these sad cases to educate the public about Louisiana's tough penalties for animal abuse.

Alleged arsonist, David Kyle, of Lacombe, Louisiana, took his crime to a terrible new level, when he locked his newly adopted dog inside the house before setting it ablaze.  His twisted actions resulted in tragic death for Boomer, a lovely Catahoula mix, who had just been adopted to Kyle by the Pearl River County SPCA just a few days before this senseless act.  HSL successfully overcame the complete indifference of the local law enforcement agents to this unconscionable act of cruelty.  Finally, with the help of Melissa Sullivan, Director of St. Tammany Animal Control, we were able to connect with the local district attorney's office to ensure that aggravated cruelty charges were also filed against Kyle.

It is with great sadness that we bid a fond farewell to Lt. Carole Rogers-Davis, of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office, who assisted us in the area of cruelty investigation for many years. She was a true friend of the animals and the Humane Society. We also remember and express our sincere gratitude to HSL supporter, Sandra Martin, who was kind enough to remember the Humane Society of Louisiana with a bequest in her estate. We are very grateful for her thoughtfulness and compassion, which has greatly helped to support our programs in these difficult times. The compassionate spirits of good friends, past and present, continue to inspire us and help make our work for the defenseless animals of Louisiana possible.

Box of Puppies  Pup on Table

There's no use trying to get inside the head of someone who abandons little puppies, by stuffing them into cardboard boxes and taping them shut.  Luckily, we were able to quickly intervene to help the little guys.  The fully recovered pups were able to tag along in our recent transport of close to two dozen pups to the
East Coast, where happy futures await them.

Mischief on the Phone

Mischief and the gang at Tylertown would certainly spread the news about animals in need--if they only could! If you'd like to help get the word out, by assisting with any of the many weekend outreach and education events planned for this spring, please pop us an email or give us a call!

Keeping Cozy in Tylertown
