Focus on Cruelty to Farm Animals

Did you know a recent United Nations report cited the livestock industry as being one of the world's primary contributors to environmental degradation? Because of the horrible abuses inflicted on animals in modern 'factory' farms, along with the adverse impact of a meat-centered diet on problems ranging from global warming to world hunger, there's never been a better time to think about reducing one's consumption of animal products. Through the years, HSL has been one of Louisiana's most vocal proponents of compassion for animals on farms. Whether people are interested in vegetarianism or just in exploring the occasional meatless alternative, meat-free dining can be delicious, as well as healthy and humane. It's certainly not all about salads and tofu! Before Katrina, HSL hosted hundreds of vegetarian cooking demos, promos, media events, cooking classes and more. Now, for the first time since the hurricane, we're renewing our commitment to farm animal protection by reestablishing an annual 'Veggie Fest' in New Orleans for 2009. If you are a friend of farm animals who'd like to help out, please contact us. You can also check out www.veganoutreach.org and www.Meatout.org for materials to read or distribute about the benefits of 'eating your veggies'!! Save the date and stay tuned for more details:

The company will send a card to your beloved, showing just how sweet you are on them and on puppy dogs, too! Just search for the Humane Society of Louisiana - Tylertown by name at http://kuranda.com/catalog/select_donee.php

Walker

AT LAST!

After being seized in a neglect case, Walker is headed north to a home, after almost 2 years of waiting for a family!

Johnna on TransportHSL Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, is pictured here on an adoption transport in late November.  She's accompanied by Elmo, little Marty, and her 'canine adoption program assistant' Aussie, who never misses a puppy run.  Before Johnna and company can head north again in the brutal February winter, we urgently need a heating system for our adoption van to keep out the bitter chill.  A guardian angel (or a few of them!) could help us get a full or partial system costing between $1800 and $3000, which will finally keep our homeless friends and caregivers warm and cozy, both at home and on the road, now and for many winters to come!

The first of two pet transports planned for the first few weeks of 2009 has already safely delivered its precious cargo!  In addition to our usual crew of needy puppies, our shelter partners up north opened their doors to even more of our 'harder to place' adult dogs, like Jackie, and even some kittens-like the adorable Lil' Rex!   We are delighted about this great start on adoptions for 2009!

The Advocate
Article from Advocate WORKING FOR TONY
AT TIGER TRUCK STOP

We have received scores of complaints over the years, regarding the plight of tigers at the 'Tiger Truck Stop' in Grosse Tete.  For years, the ruck stop owners have displayed big cats under a federal USDA exhibitor's license.  Since the housing of tigers in this manner is still, sadly, allowed by law, HSL is negotiating with the owners of Tony, the last remaining tiger, in hopes of having him relocated to a suitable sanctuary. Tony is an 8 year old Bengal tiger, who was born at the truck stop.  He has lived out his life behind bars, on a concrete slab.

HSL held a January 10th town meeting in Iberville parish to discuss local animal protection concerns, including Tony's plight. The meeting was attended by concerned citizens and a representative of Tony's owners, who expressed a stated interest in his well being and care.  The meeting was also attended by Ms. Rannah Gray, who worked for many years in the LSU Athletic Department and who provided an enormous amount of information on the school's 'mascot', Mike the Tiger. She discussed the level of care needed to maintain tigers in captivity and informed the assembly that the most recently acquired Mike the Tiger (who was sadly acquired after the death of the last Mike) at least has a full-time veterinarian and four vet student assistants on duty each day; Mike also resides in a new multimillion dollar enclosure. That said, even with those 'amenities', Mike still suffers from a variety of ailments, requiring constant care and treatment, apart from other concerns.

We recently followed up after the meeting to put Ms. Gray in touch with Michael Sandlin, Tony's owner. We additionally offered to make it possible for Sandlin and his family to visit the two sanctuaries willing to care for Tony, and we agreed to cover any potential relocation costs, in an attempt to remove any impediments to his eventual relocation. We will keep working to secure a brighter future for Tony and will keep you apprised of our work to ensure that he lives out the rest of his life in a more suitable and humane setting.
