Defending animals since 1988

Dear Paws Cause Member:

Halloween--
It's the perfect time of year for us to sing the praises of our wonderful, but all too often under appreciated, black cats!  Sadly it is inexplicably difficult to find homes for these sleek beauties, so it's not unusual for us to have more black cats than any other kind of homeless animal at Tylertown.  Many of our feral cats, who were rescued during Katrina, are lovely black kitties, too, so our shelter can have a haunting look of "Halloween" about it all year long.  Why not fall under the spell of one of our magical felines and be enchanted for a lifetime?  We'd love to see some of these special cats and kittens find homes for the holidays--some have been waiting so very, very long!  Thank you so much for supporting our Halloween cats and other wonderful creatures this October.

It's frightening how the economy has impacted contributions this Halloween,  so we're urgently seeking sponsors for our next puppy transport!

Dine with us for a good cause--the restaurant is donating a portion of the proceeds from all food and drinks sold during these hours to HSL.  Well behaved pooches are welcome, too!

We'll also be holding drawings for great prizes that night, as we mark the end of our '30 in 30' fundraising campaign to raise $30,000 by November 6th.  As a new, added incentive to give, all donors to the fundraising drive are eligible to win great prizes!  The Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Coleman E. Adler & Sons Jewelers and Gray Line Tours/New Orleans Steamboat Company have all donated items to help us raise money for the 30K in 30 days campaign.  Donors at the $25 level are also eligible for a stuffed pooch or kitty.  For more information, please visit our web site.

Treat

A Treat for Our Animals at Tylertown

We're delighted that so many of our wonderful friends and volunteers from the Katrina disaster relief effort have stayed in touch and have remained active with our organization since the storm.  You can imagine how excited we are that one of our favorite volunteers, Canadian veterinarian, Dr. Pilar Gosselin, who made such a tremendous contribution during Katrina, has returned to Tylertown and is once again volunteering to help the animals at our shelter this month.  We are so very thankful for this special Halloween treat!

ARS Challenge

Help Us Win the Shelter Challenge!

With a few quick clicks of your mouse at the computer each day, you could help us win the Animal Rescue Site's shelter challenge!  Our friends and supporters are invited to click and vote for us every day through Sunday, December 14th.  There's a top prize of $25,000 and the leading group in each state will win $1000.  HSL is clearly in the running for Louisiana, and there's no reason we shouldn't be able to win the $1000 prize, if our members support us in this cause!

Go to www.theanimalrescuesite.com.  Make your daily 'click' on the purple button, then look for the 'Vote Now' button at the top of the page.  Then, remember to return to the site and vote for us daily!  There are e-cards and other online tools to help you spread the word to friends and family, as well

Shelters in the Spotlight

Last month's alert covered HSL's fight to stop the horrors at the Napoleonville pound--we'll be keeping you updated on that ongoing campaign in the coming weeks.  As the state's only animal protection charity to consistently focus on the shockingly widespread abuse of animals in our local pounds, HSL will be expanding its efforts in that area this year.  We will soon be sending out an experienced worker to document conditions and animal care programs in five Louisiana facilities.  As always, we will follow up on our inspections by communicating and directly working with community leaders and officials, to help resolve problems and to institute critically needed changes at their facilities.  We'll be taking it a step further this year, with our next round of statewide investigations.  We'll be preparing a comprehensive 'state of our our shelters' report, which we will release to our elected officials in Baton Rouge.

Based on our most recent findings, we will press for the institution of a statewide regulation system, which will monitor the operation of Louisiana's pounds and shelters, according to accepted, humane standards.  We will also be busy developing new eductional tools, to help small rural shelters improve their services.  We'll be providing them with sample animal care policies and procedures manuals and forms, as well as with information on setting up and maintaining free web sites, to help promote their adoptable pets, and more.  We'll also encourage and support them in setting up community 'friends of the shelter' groups, to provide needed community support for animals in our state's underfunded public pounds.  Additionally, we'll be coming up with new ways to recognize the many, many shelters doing wonderful work in Louisiana.  There are lot of heroes working in the trenches, too!
