Dear Paws Cause Member:
Thank you so much for your support during the long, hot, dog days of summer! We understand that many of our supporters are experiencing financial hardships as we are, during these tough economic times, so your generosity at this time is particularly appreciated.
Our apologies for the delay in circulating this June alert! Please note, there is a casual event on July 10th that you might enjoy...read more below

Growing Veggies, Going Veggie:
The caring, eco-friendly workers at our Tylertown shelter are doing their best to 'live off the land' these days. Our crew was rightly proud of their very first crop of zucchini and squash--and one tomato! If anyone out there has any great vegetarian recipes featuring squash or zucchini, please send them our way! (In the background to the left, you'll notice Daisy, looking decidedly unimpressed with the harvest; she's happy to report that Tylertown's resident canines and kitties will be sticking to their favorite premium dog and cat foods and treats.) Speaking of vegetables and vegetarianism...for 20 years, the Humane Society of Louisiana has worked to promote compassion for all creatures--from cats and cows, to dogs and pigs and more. We've hosted scores of veggie friendly events and activities, from food tasting and outreach events to vegetarian festivals, and we've always featured delicious vegetarian foods at our events. Once people sample the delicious varieties of vegetarian dishes available, they are often eager to start experimenting with new foods that are not only healthy, but are good for animals and the planet, too!
Join the New Orleans Vegetarian Meetup Group! To help promote compassion for farm animals, HSL Executive Director, Jeff Dorson, has recently formed the New Orleans Vegetarian Meetup Group. The group aims to work with the Humane Society of Louisiana to educate interested people about vegetarianism. Members plan to meet once a month to share a vegetarian meal, and there are plans to reestablish our annual Vegetarian Festival in the city. To RSVP, learn more or to join the vegetarian meetup group. Go to www.vegetarian.meetup.com/515 to get involved or contact Jeff Dorson at the Humane Society of Louisiana.
NOTE: The next meetup event is scheduled for Thursday, July 10th at 6:30pm at Tomatillo's, 437 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70116. The group will be ordering delicious vegetarian dishes off the menu and gathering to watching the new CBS TV show "The Greatest American Dog" in the courtyard. Well behaved canines are invited to attend. There's no cover charge or cost for admission, just show up to meet other animal friendly folks and enjoy a great meal. We apologize for this short notice.

Observances and Fundraisers to Mark Katrina Anniversary
Last month, we told you about the official unveiling of the National Katrina Animal Memorial statue. The event is scheduled to take place on the third anniversary of the hurricane, on Friday, August 29th, at 10am, in the chambers of the New Orleans City Council. The dedication of the statue will be followed by a luncheon at the AstorCrowne Plaza Hotel, where our keynote speaker will be Wendy Diamond, author and star of the CBS show The Greatest American Dog, and editor of Animal Fair magazine; HSL patron Wendy and her dog, Lucky, are the Chairperson and Chair Dog of the Katrina Pet Memorial Fund. Other featured speakers will be Frances Hayward of the Amigo Foundation and Debrah Schnackenberg, Director of Animal Services for the American Humane Association.
Additional fundraisers are now being scheduled throughout that weekend to support the Humane Society of Louisiana. Please mark your calendars and turn out to support HSL! We'll be remembering the heartbreak of the past and looking forward optimistically to a brighter future for all animals in New Orleans and Louisiana. On the evening of Friday, August 29th, Tipitina's music club will host a music benefit for our group, which will provide an uplifting ending to the memorial observances held earlier in the day. The next day, on Saturday, August 30th, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Canal Street, will host a 'Yappy Hour' fundraiser for us in conjunction with Animal Fair magazine--details to be announced. Can't make it to town but still want to participate? Why not invite your friends over for a Paws to Rebuild cocktail party fundraiser in conjunction with our efforts that weekend? Printed materials will soon be available online, so that you can share the story of our ongoing work to rebuild and recover with your guests. Please contact us if you'd like more information or if you'd like to get involved. Fighting Cruelty in the Classroom!
As part of our ongoing work to professionalize the field of cruelty investigation and to improve the enforcement of our state and local humane laws, HSL recently co-sponsored an all-day cruelty investigation workshop at the Denham Springs City Hall in Livingston parish. Speakers included representatives from:
LA State Police, Gaming Enforcement Division
New Orleans Crime Lab Orleans Parish Sheriff's Department
Jefferson Animal Control New Orleans Police Department
Your ongoing support will enable us to expand these important educational and outreach efforts, to help more Louisiana citizens, shelters and law enforcement agencies work together more effectively. By working together in partnership, we can put more animal abusers behind bars and help save the animal victims of abuse and neglect.

Charlie and his pals are doing a lot of yawning and cat napping at the shelter this summer.
Thank you for helping us touch the lives of so many wonderful animals this month--like little Doc. He's getting lots of love and attention!

Guardian Angels Needed to Help Make Our Shelter Dreams Come True!
Keeping cool is pretty tricky proposition for animals and staff alike at our Tylertown shelter these days. If anyone can help us purchase items on our Summer Wish List, to help us keep our animals and their dedicated caregivers more comfortable, they'd greatly appreciate it. Our urgent needs are for: water misters, pools, portable air conditioners and window units, stainless steel water buckets, large silver tarps with bungee cords, yard swings, and a large freezer. We always need an ample supply of bottled water and cold drinks, as well. Because it's hurricane season, we also need to be prepared with additional 36" and 42" wire folding crates. We're excited to report that a generous volunteer will soon be donating carpentry and construction services at the shelter for two weeks. To make the most of this very kind contribution, we particularly need building supplies. Constructing shade stands to help our resident canines beat the heat will be a top priority. If you'd like to speak to our Animal Services Director, Johnna Harris, about our specific Wish List items, please contact her, otherwise, gift cards for Lowe's, Home Depot or WalMart will help us get the supplies we urgently need.
