Dear Friend of the Humane Society:

The dog days of summer are almost here, not only for our dogs and pups, but for the cats, ferrets, horses and their hard working HSL caregivers.   We would like you to see the grateful faces of some of the animals you've helped us save throughout this email.

Times are really tough for us this hurricane season, but there's some really good news on the horizon:  we finally have a contract with a buyer for our New Orleans property in August!  Securing this funding will go a long way towards fueling our recovery.

In these harsh economic conditions, HSL's expenses are dramatically escalating.
Rising gas prices are putting a real squeeze on  HSL!  Keeping our large adoption vehicle, rescue vans  and investigations vehicles on the road is critical, but some journeys are becoming so costly that we can no longer afford them.

We really need your help RIGHT NOW to get us through the long hot summer!   Due to the  sweltering heat at Tylertown we urgently need additional supplies and equipment.  As always, on our end, we're doing absolutely all we can.  Our caring staff members have volunteered to deeply cut their already low wages, to get us through the pinch.

If only our shelter animals could be as "cool" as Whisper this summer!  HSL saved this beautiful, deaf Aussie mix from a Louisiana pound, then placed him in a wonderful home in Maine.  We love this picture of him on vacation with his family.

PLEASE, IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS A CONTACTS OR CONNECTIONS WITH ANYONE ABLE TO HELP US GET A RELIABLE CRUELTY INVESTIGATIONS VEHICLE WITH AIR CONDITIONING, PLEASE CONTACT US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!  Operable used vehicles of any model or make can always be donated to the Humane Society of Louisiana for a tax deduction.

"Red" Rescued Again!

Red

GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR RED:  Red is a shy, beautiful dog, who HSL recently fostered at Tylertown for several months.  We took custody of him from another group unable to care for him, and we agreed to house him, until he could be transported to a waiting family in Maine.  Because of his past history, Red was always extremely frightened of people, but the animal caretakers at Tylertown worked with him for months to help socialize him, before taking him on the trip north.  Red travelled with us on our most recent transport to Maine.  A few days after our HSL crew left to return to Louisiana, in spite of the Maine crew's very best efforts for this sensitive and special dog, Red, a consummate escape artist, managed to elude the wonderful veterinarian who was housing him.  He escaped into the woods nearby before he could be delivered to his new family.  When repeated, desperate and thorough local searches failed to result in his capture, our HSL workers felt they had no choice but to turn around and head back to Maine, as they hoped he might respond to their familiar voices.  After long days of hoping, calling and searching--and even contacting a pet psychic--our crew was delighted to have at least had a series of 'Red sightings', although he apparently wasn't prepared to return of his own accord.  When it became clear that he was not straying too far from the area where food and water was being left for him,  the HSL crew felt comfortable in returning, leaving the vet and our local contacts to set traps and continue the relentless search.  You'll be delighted, as we were, to learn that there was a wonderful happy ending.  Red was finally found no worse for the wear, after his days spent in the wild.  This is one dog who's finally at the end of a very long journey to a happy ending, thanks to the generosity of our members.

We'll never know exactly what happened to this  poor little pup, but we do know his life was miraculously saved, when an animal lover named Shelly made a "wrong" turn and came upon him, at the edge of a Tangipahoa Parish road.  Little Hammond, named for the nearby city, was already near death and too weak to stand.  The poor angel was also completely hairless and wearing a collar attached to a frayed length of rope.  As sad and shocking as it seems, HSL has come across many animals who have been tied up in the woods and abandoned over the years, so perhaps this is what happened to Hammond, before he somehow managed to break free.  To raise needed funds for special cases like Hammond, we recently kicked off a fundraising drive to create a Cruelty Recovery Fund for the Humane Society of Louisiana; our goal is to raise $10,000 in the weeks and months ahead.  Hammond is recuperating and will soon be ready for a new home.  Please contact us if you would like to donate to the fund or adopt this sweet boy.
