Dear Paws Cause Member:
Thanks to all of you who helped make our Canines on the Catwalk event a memorable evening and a great success! To provide urgently needed funding for the humane society, we're committed to reestablishing more annual fundraisers in the New Orleans area in 2008. Our next major event, the second HSL bachelor and bachelorette auction, will be held in August. HSL's last such auction was very successful almost three years ago, when it was held just days before Katrina. Contact us if you'd like to join our event committee, or if you know any animal-friendly bachelors or bachelorettes, who might be willing to go on the "auction block" for a great cause. As always, we deeply appreciate all your support.

PAWS CAUSE MEMBER HELPS CRACK DOWN ON DOG FIGHTING
This month, longtime member, Bill Johnson, made a special donation towards a cause that is particularly important to him -- stopping dog fighting in Louisiana. After discussing some giving options with HSL Executive Director, Jeff Dorson, Mr. Johnson generously agreed to donate 24 GPS systems to the Louisiana State Police, to aid their officers in the field. Over the last several years, the Gaming Enforcement Division of the Louisiana State Police has arrested over 150 people for dog fighting offenses! Captain Joseph Lentini recently met with Jeff Dorson and Bill Johnson to welcome the donation. The Captain noted how the systems will greatly help officers in remote, poorly marked rural areas, where these underground dog fights often occur.

Defending the Voiceless, Caring for the Most Vulnerable
All too often, HSL is the last line of defense for abused and neglected animals with nowhere else to turn. One very special animal, who recently survived against incredible odds, is Hammond, pictured here after his recent rescue.
We'll never know exactly what happened to this poor little pup, but we do know his life was miraculously saved, when an animal lover named Shelly made a "wrong" turn and accidentally came upon him, at the edge of a Tangipahoa Parish road. Little Hammond, named for the nearby city, was already near death and was too weak to stand. The poor angel was also completely hairless and was wearing a collar attached to a frayed length of rope. As sad and shocking as it seems, HSL has come across many animals who have been tied up in the woods and abandoned over the years, so perhaps this is what happened to Hammond, before he somehow managed to break free. Since finding Hammond, the little dog's rescuer has worked with HSL to raise awareness of his plight and to raise funds for his ongoing recovery. Sadly, on a purely practical note, saving deserving animals like Hammond is extremely difficult for a grassroots group like ours, because of the staggering costs of veterinary care. We know you'll agree with us, however, that animals who have survived against such incredible odds are particularly deserving of our help. To raise needed funds for these special cases, we recently kicked off a fundraising drive to create a Cruelty Recovery Fund for the Humane Society of Louisiana; our goal is to raise $10,000 in the weeks and months ahead. Please let your fellow animal lovers know about little Hammond and our current fundraising drive, so we can be sure to raise the funds we need to ensure his recovery and to intervene on behalf of other such deserving animals.
MEMORIAL TO HONOR THE ANIMAL VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA Friday, August 29, 2008
Countless thousands of people came to the aid of animals in desperate need in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Because of the actions and donations of caring people locally and across the country, thousands of animals along the Gulf Coast, and in our hometown of New Orleans, were saved. To show our appreciation and to honor the animals who perished in this devastating national disaster, we will be hosting an all-day ceremony in New Orleans this year, on the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. This observance will include a memorial service and the unveiling of the National Katrina Animal Memorial, designed by respected artist, Richard Chashoudian. In the chambers of the New Orleans City Council, Councilwoman Stacy Head will accept the statue on behalf of the city. At the ceremony, an invocation will be read along with a special reading by Kostro, poet and author. Authors Allen and Linda Anderson will read from their award-winning book, Rescued: Saving Animals From Disaster. Honorary awards will go to Garo Alexanian and Amanda and Marty St. John of MuttShack for their work during the 2005 storm season and beyond.
