Dear Paws Cause Member:
Thanks to your kind support, another HSL transport of 27 adorable puppies and dogs just made it safely to the East Coast where loving homes await them! Two of our canine passengers were the remaining homeless puppies from the 'Edgard 5' cruelty case. To help fund lifesaving programs like these, our second annual dog fashion show and benefit, 'Canines on the Catwalk,' will be held on May 17th. You'll be able to purchase tickets by PayPal or credit card at our website or by calling us at 1-888-6-HUMANE. Save $5 on the $50 admission price by purchasing your tickets by May 12th. Please help us spread the word, and contact us if you'd like to volunteer or help us distribute promotional fliers.

HSL Voted America's "Pet Friendliest Shelter"HSL is honored to have been named the nation's top "Pet Friendly Shelter" by the readers of Animal Fair magazine! Winners of the New York's magazine's fourth annual "Cesar@ Five Dog Bone Awards" were recognized for "their exceptional hospitality and services, symbiotic ambience, cheerful atmosphere and superb cleanliness." Animal Fair magazine combines celebrity profiles, pet friendly travel tips, reviews on the latest cruelty free products and more. For more information, visit http://www.animalfair.com/events/cesar2008.html

Friendly NINJA would love to find a home, but until that happy day, life at HSL is pretty comfortable! Cat lovers will be happy to know that HSL will be working hard this year to raise funds for a "Katrina Kitty Village" at Tylertown, so that we'll be able to provide a secure, very spacious outdoor area and barn for our feral felines, who were rescued in the immediate aftermath of the Hurricane. Since they survived against incredible odds, we're committed to giving them the best of all possible futures in our care.
Lucky Nestle now has a loving family in Maine!

Welcome Back Ian!

We're very happy that HSL animal caretaker, Ian Warberg, recently returned to Tylertown and is now volunteering full time at our shelter! The animals really enjoy spending quality time with their old pal. Joey, pictured above is Ian's feathered fan.
We're opossum friendly, too! Here's one of our tiniest recent additions:

Please Support the Bear Protection Act of 2008
In the early nineties, HSL passed legislation creating Louisiana's "Save the Bear" license plate. It continues to raise funds for our state's imperiled black bears. Now, an important issue facing the U.S. Congress in 2008 is improving protection for American bears. Sadly, they are being poached to obtain their gallbladders to make over-the-counter "medicinal" potions. Please support HR5534, The Bear Protection Act of 2008. This bill--if enacted into law--will replace the patchwork of state laws against trafficking in bear gall bladders for the folk medicine trade and will uniformly ban interstate commerce in bear gallbladders.
Louisiana has some of the best bear protection laws in the U.S., so there is no good reason why our seven US Congressmen should be unwilling to support--and preferably co-sponsor--HR5534. Of course, they are only likely to do so if they hear from a great many Louisiana residents urging them to sign on. Previous versions of of HR5534 have twice passed the U.S. Senate but have never passed in the US House of Representatives. For that reason, humane groups are focusing efforts on getting this bill through the House. Here's what you can do to help:
Make one phone call or send one fax to the Washington, DC office of your congressman or congresswoman in the U.S. House of Representatives. If you phone and no one answers, leave a voicemail. If you are not sure who your US Representative is, go to http://www.house.gov and enter your ZIP code in the upper left box OR just call the Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121, give the operator your ZIP code, and ask to be connected to your representative's office.
SAMPLE PHONE MESSAGE
"My name is ___________. I am from your district and my address is ___________. Please support and co-sponsor HR5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008. Thank you." SAMPLE FAX MESSAGE
"American bears are being killed to obtain their gallbladders. This frivolous exploitation of our American wildlife must stop. I ask for your strong support and co-sponsorship of this important legislation."
