The standard for estimating attendance at unticketed, outdoor events has been recently established based upon estimates used for the Inauguration of President Obama. Depending upon the venue, one person is estimated to need three square feet of space in a crowded area or five square feet of space in a more loosely packed area. By knowing the amount of available space and crowd density, a reasonable crowd estimate can be calculated.
The University of Minnesota Tourism Center offers an annual opportunity for event organizers to update and improve their skills. After completing the program, participants report increased municipal support, greater clarity of event policies, and increased sponsorship sales. The 2009 class is being held on the St. Paul Campus of the U. of M., September 24-26 and October 1-3.
