Festivals Fact
There are approximately 50,000 community-based festivals in the U.S.A. requiring municipal services (police-fire-EMS-sanitation)
Greetings!

Summer is the time to celebrate!  Whether it be a community festival or a family gathering, summer is a great time of the year to host a party.

Festivals are often one of the most exciting ways a community expresses its  "welcome" to visitors.  Festivals may establish a community's image and attitude as well as attract tourists and residents alike.

The Festival Management Program iimproves the skills of those who organize a community's festivals and events.  To learn more about the Festival and Event Management Program, visit www.tourism.umn.edu.

Sincerely,

Kent Gustafson

Market Insight
The standard for estimating attendance at unticketed, outdoor events has been recently established based upon estimates used for the Inauguration of President Obama.  Depending upon the venue, one person is estimated to need three square feet of space in a crowded area or five square feet of space in a more loosely packed area.  By knowing the amount of available space and crowd density, a reasonable crowd estimate can be calculated.

Event ManagementTraining
The University of Minnesota Tourism Center offers an annual opportunity for event organizers to update and improve their skills. After completing the program, participants report increased municipal support, greater clarity of event policies, and increased sponsorship sales. The 2009 class is being held on the St. Paul Campus of the U. of M., September 24-26 and October 1-3.  In addition to the prepared curriculum, guest speakers and a "behind-the-scenes" event experience are included.  Registration   Interested in bringing the class to your community?
