Dodge Park Rest Home
Friday Special

    Funny Friday...Friday Laugh...
A little humor to end the  week
September 07, 2011

Dodge Park Rest Home subscribes to a philosophy known as "normalization." The theories of normalization revolve around personal value, but our society values only certain things in people. We value youth as opposed to being old, health as opposed to illness, and strength as opposed to weakness. We value personal possessions such as nice homes, cars and clothing. We value accomplishments and valued job roles. We also value education and mental acumen as opposed to mental deficiencies brought on by a dementing illness.

What happens when an older person with dementia moves into a Rest Home community or a nursing home? They no longer exhibit the characteristics that our society values. They are neither young nor articulate and they no longer have their valued jobs or possessions. This can lead to the person being subconsciously thought of as different and may even be assigned negative roles. An example is that the elderly person with dementia might be thought

of as a child instead of a valued adult. They may be given coloring books or dolls and talked to in a childish, demeaning manner.

Normalization dictates that you should do everything possible to enhance positive characteristics that add value to the elderly with dementia. We can't change the fact that the person is old or has dementia, but we can make sure that the person is dressed and groomed in a way similar to someone living in the community at large. We can make sure ladies have appropriate make-up and jewelry, attend make up classes, or they may carry a purse. The gentlemen can wear shirts and sport coats. Additionally, they should engage in activities that demonstrate their competence and creativity.

Value can also be enhanced by surrounding the resident with imagery, photos, and other memorabilia to help tell the residents' life story. In their memory lane on their room walls we can put copies of diplomas and awards received over the lifetime of the resident. We can put in items that tell us of hobbies and jobs held.

Carrying the story through the resident's room, we can make sure that we personalize the room with personal furnishings and items that tell us about their interests and accomplishments.

To find out more about Dodge Park Rest Home "normalization" process come and visit us anytime, and we will be happy to share our residents life and story

Hope to see you all at our upcoming events.

Dodge Park Rest Home weekly $25 challenge

The correct answer for last riddle was: Bill owns a dalmation named Andy, and Colin owns  a dalmation named Donald. The winner of last week riddle is Paul Pelletier.

This week new riddle:

In one week a car showroom was selling only blue and red cars.Throughout the week the same number of cars were for sale - when one was sold it was immediately replaced by another. A red car was sold first and was replaced by a blue one, after which there were the same number of red and blue cars for sale. Later a blue car was sold and replaced by a red one, giving the same amount of red and blue cars as originally. Then another blue car was sold and replaced by a red one. There were then twice as many red cars as the blue ones.

How many cars in total were for sale at any time.

Please email your answer to m.shalev@dodgepark.com. We will raffle a $25 gift certificate to Starbucks between all individuals who solve this puzzle.

Cashing a check...

Louise went into her bank to cash a cheque. She looked so hesitant that the cashier went to help her. 'Please sign the back of the cheque, 'the teller told her, 'as you'd sign a letter.

'Louise looked extremely grateful, scribbled on the cheque and passed it back to the cashier.

Signed on the back was: 'Yours affectionately, Louise.'

Hospital visit

A Spanish guy enters a hospital to have a minor operation.

A nurse begins to take down his information: name, insurance company, etc.

"In case of emergency, whom should we notify?"

"You mean if I become very sick?"

"Well . . . yes."

"If that happens, call a doctor!"

Money owed...

Two bankers are in a bank when armed robbers burst in.

While several of the robbers take the money from the tellers, others line the customers, including the bankers, up against a wall, and proceed to take their jewelry, wallets and watches.

While this is going on banker number one puts something in banker number two's hand. Without looking down, banker number two whispers, 'What is this?' to which banker number one replies, 'It's that $50 I owe you.'

Safety drill?

An airline stewardess was giving the standard safety briefing to the passengers. She had just finished saying 'In the event of a water landing, your seat cushion may be used as a flotation device,' when a man remarked, "Hey! If the plane can't fly, why should I believe the seat can float?"
