The Talisman
Vol. 3 Issue |
I am not in Kansas anymore. When my daughter had her birthday party last month, more than a few things had changed since the last one. PiƱatas, clowns and balloons were replaced by a DJ, Glowsticks and boys with gel in their hair. Rather than the photo of us hovering over a Mermaid cake, I was not so politely asked to leave the party...or at least not to dance.
She's only 11.
As a parent and a lawyer, I ran around the house asking the kids to stop running, counting heads and making sure things stayed G-Rated on the dance floor. Perhaps the most troubling aspect was that parents literally dropped their kids off at our front door without so much as a handshake or a phone number. Some of them did not even speak English. We do, after all, live in Miami. Maybe this is a Miami thing, but a recent Florida case as well as this experience has motivated me to devote this month's TALISMAN to some simple and yet apparently unconsidered tips to keep your children safe and you legally protected for the next party. Whooohoo. |
SIX WAYS TO BULLETPROOF YOUR KID'S NEXT PARTY |
1. KNOW YOUR HOST - If you have never met the host of the party, how can you leave your child there? Do not be fooled into thinking your kids are safe by a big house with a fancy car parked in the driveway. I know people who would not let a stranger walk their dog but dropped their kids off at my house last month. Exchange phone numbers and make sure they work before you leave.
2. FIND OUT IF ALCOHOL IS SERVED - Parties go from fun to a disaster when alcohol is in the mix. Even if the kids are not drinking, the hosts might. In fact, assume they are, the longer the party is set for. Would you really like the chaperones to be drunk?
3. FIND OUT ABOUT OLDER SIBLINGS - It may look like an innocent 5th grader's party, until the older brother from high school comes home with his teammates from the football team.
4. WHAT IS THE PARENT/KID RATIO - When there are more than 10 kids per parent - even the best supervision becomes hard to manage.
5. FOOD - The egg salad and potato chip dip sure tasted good when they were made that morning, but what if they have been sitting out all day, especially in the heat? If your kid has allergies let the host know.
6. FIREARMS - Embarrassed to ask if the host keeps a gun in the house? If your kids have had no exposure to gun safety or training and come across a gun for the first time at a stranger's house: need I say more? Every year hundreds of families have to bury a child because of the mishandling of a firearm. |
ACCUTANE DANGERS |
You would be wrong if you, like many, think that a drug must be safe because it is on the market and is FDA approved.
Accutane is a drug for treating severe acne. Originally it was developed as chemo for cancer. However, they found that it was also effective in treating severe acne. Due to overly aggressive marketing it became frequently prescribed for common acne.
Some patients who have used Accutane have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease, Colitis and many other side effects. There have been nearly 1,000 reported birth defects and over 10,000 miscarriages.
As a result, strict precautions are recommended before using this dangerous drug. Certainly Accutane should be prescribed for only the most severe cases of acne and only as a last resort. Even then, there is some question whether Accutane should even be on the market.
We are now representing those injured by Accutane. If you have taken Accutane and have any questions, please contact us. |

A few words from my client, Cindy Papale a breast cancer survivor, on her "journey through the world of breask cancer."
"My name is Cindy Papale, and I am a breast cancer survivor. My life totally changed in July, 2000 when I heard the words for the first time, 'your biopsy is positive for breast cancer.' Because I worked for a breast surgeon for eleven of my twenty-seven years at the University of Miami my first thought was: How bad is my cancer? Then I thought am I going to die."
