The Talisman
Dear Friend,

This last week has been a painful one for many of us.  The passing of our beloved and respected friend and colleague Patrice Talisman, has forced me to simply stop and reflect.  Perhaps the deaths of Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett or Billy Mays have had a similar effect on you?

To honor my friend, I devote this issue in her memory and re-name our newsletter:

The Talisman

Webster's dictionary defines a Talisman as:  "an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune or something producing apparently magical or miraculous effects."

Patrice Talisman was all of those things to me and the many clients we represented together. She was a fervent believer in our system of justice and the rule of law.  I am sure it was no coincidence that this great lawyer was born on the Fourth of July.

In her memory, and in the spirit of averting evil or harm, this issue discusses how to keep your family safe this 4th of July.
10 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe this 4th of July

As we gather to celebrate our country's independence, I urge you to take some precautions to keep you and your family safe:

1. Look, you are not a professional pyrotechnic.  Leave it to the pros and find a professional show.

2. If you absolutely have to set-off your own fireworks, buy them from a reputable and licensed vendor.  Do not sign any waivers and do not make them yourself.

3. Check your State and City laws.  It is illegal to use fireworks in Florida, which include: shells and mortars, multiple tube devices, Roman candles, rockets and firecrackers, without a permit.

4. Never let your children handle fireworks unsupervised; even sparklers can cause burns and eye injuries.

 5. Think about your pets.  Loud noises can be frightening and potentially damaging to animals.  If you go, leave your dogs at home.

 6. Have a fire extinguisher or water hose handy.  Last year, Florida had 137 fires related to fireworks and sparklers causing $400,000.00 in damage.

7. Do not carry fireworks in your pocket, especially when lighting other fireworks.

8. Do not use open, tampered or "left over" fireworks.

9. Do not drink when lighting fireworks.  Alcohol and fire do not mix.

10.  Light only one at a time and do not try to re-light a dud.
Aronfeld Team Accomplishments

Aronfeld

12 year old Jon Antony Muniz broke his leg when the Turret Tower video game spun Turret Towerout of control.

The Turret Tower is a video arcade game manufactured by NAMCO and designed by Dell (not the computer company). Gameworks which is owned by SEGA is a video arcade/bar and grill in the Sunset Shops, located in South Miami, Florida. Gameworks has locations across the country.

For some reason Gameworks decided to move the coin box which was designed to be outside the game, inside the game, creating a very dangerous and defective condition, that snapped our client's tibia. Apparently this is not the first time that someone has been hurt while playing the Turret Tower and we are investigating why.

This personal injury case is being litigated in Miami and is being handled by Spencer Aronfeld and Bruce E. Shemrock, who leads the Product Liability division of our firm.
Read more about this case in this week's Miami New Times.

tips from our Client Care Specialist, Candace Grossman

Honey, do you have the passport?
Before you travel this summer, things have changed. As of June 1st, 2009 the 3rd phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative goes into effect.

The type of identification you'll need depends on whether you're traveling by air, land or sea. All Americans will need a passport to enter the U.S.A.

Summer Time BBQs
Cook hamburgers to 160 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent E. coli.

Try not to eat raw eggs. They can be contaminated with salmonella. Do not add them to protein shakes, cookie dough and Caesar salad dressings, either.
