I want you and your family to have the safest possible summer. Recent Skateboardingstudies show that more accidents occur when people are on vacation, especially in foreign countries.  Vacationers tend to lower their inhibitions, drink more and find themselves in unfamiliar places.

This month I focus on ways to help you and your family be safe this summer.

10 Travel Safety Tips

1. Go Under the Radar. Safety starts with your clothes. Do not dress with fancy clothes or lots of jewelry, even if it's fake. Try not to call attention to yourself.

2. Pack lightly.  You will be less tired to navigate foreign streets and traffic if you are not hauling heavy luggage.

3. Leave valuables at home or in your room safe. When you pack place them in various bags rather than in one.

4. If you wear glasses, take more than one pair. Keep your medicine in their original containers to avoid problems with Customs.

5. Create an account online to access copies of prescriptions, insurance cards, driver's licenses, passports and social security cards.

6. Take a digital photograph from your cellphone camera of your hotel room number and the exterior of your hotel so you can remember which room you are in when it is late at night.

7. Bring an extra set of passport photos in case you loose your passport.

8. Use covered luggage tags. To avoid having anyone obtaining your name and address. Consider shipping your luggage to your destination all together.

9. Research your specific destination before you go for Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts.

10. Consider registering with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country you are visiting in case of an emergency.  Click here to register on line.

Katz v. Whole Foods Store

On June 2, 2009, our firm resolved the claim of M.K. for a settlement in excess of six figures for injuries sustained while shopping at Whole Foods KatzStore in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While purchasing a case of 365 Mineral Water, the box opened up causing our client significant injuries to his ankle.  We were able to obtain compensation for both lost time from work and his medical expenses.

KC Boutiette v. Progressive Insurance
On May 15, 2009, our firm successfully resolved the car accident law suit of Olympic Speedskating legend, KC Boutiette, who was seriously injured in a kcMiami, Florida car crash on April 10, 2008.   KC has proudly represented the United States in four Winter Olympics.  We are pleased to have been his attorneys and wish him a speedy recovery as he trains for his fifth Olympic trial.

This story was profiled in the Miami New Times.

Smith v. Strouse
Our firm represented Rachelle Smith who tripped and fell in her mother's home in Volusia County and broke her ankle on Christmas day.  It was a difficult case for all, since we were representing a daughter forced to sue her own mother to obtain justice.  The case was resolved for a confidential amount prior to trial.

Sara's Class
My daughter's fourth grade teacher asked me to read a book to the class about lawyers.  I could not find any that were suitable for 10 year olds.  So I wrote one myself.  It tells the story about a 10 year old girl's experience in finding out what lawyers do and how she ended up representing her class in a battle against the Miami Dade School Board.

The story will be published this summer.

If you would like to know more or find out how Spencer can read to your organization please contact Patricia Sequeira.
