Dear Friend,
Happy April and welcome to our monthly newsletter.
I recently had my eyes examined. My eye doctor wanted to dilate my eyes to get a better look. I was in a hurry and quite frankly do not enjoy the experience. She told me about some of the horror stories she has encountered when patients refuse to have their eyes dilated and of the diseases that often go undiagnosed and left untreated.
So I decided to include some safety tips in this issue to help you and your family keep your eyes healthy.
I am also pleased to announce the addition of a new column to our monthly newsletter called Candy's Corner. Candace Grossman, our firm's first Client Care Specialist will share some insight directed towards our friends of advanced years. If you look closely you may see a striking resemblance to me, as Candace is also my mother.
Lastly I am happy to tell you that I just finished writing my first book. It's in the hand's of my editor, Kathy Osbourne, and hopefully will be published by this summer.
Here's wishing you and your loved ones a safe and healthy April, Passover and Easter. |

Young and Old-Get Yearly Eye Examination
Most doctors recommend yearly eye exams. Some of my clients mistakenly
rely on the DMV to tell them if they need glasses, but that is only part of the reason to get an annual exam.
The most important reason is prevention. Studies show that one in four school aged children have an eye problem that if left untreated could lead to permanent loss of vision. The requirement for a yearly examination is even more important as we get older to identify common eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Here are some ways to get the most from your exam:
-
Make sure your optometrist is both licensed and insured.
-
Insist on having your eyes dilated. Dilation gives your doctor a better view of your retina, optic nerve and blood vessels in the back of the eye. My own doctor, Panta Atarod-Zadeh, says, "it's like turning a keyhole into a window."
-
If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them with you so your previous prescription can be compared.
-
Bring someone to drive you home after your dilation. Sunlight and glare can cause you to have limited vision.
-
Go late in the day so you do not have to return to work or school.
-
Calendar you next appointment before you leave so you do not forget.
-
Obtain two copies of your prescription. One for you and one for your primary care doctor.
-
Never agree to LASIK eye surgery without obtaining a second opinion. |
Spencer's First Book!
Finally, I have finished writing my first book. It's a step-by-step road map designed for both law students and lawyers on how to start and build a successful law firm. It is filled with both personal stories about my successes and failures and real pointers on how to be your own boss.
The Forward to the book will be written by the great Morris Dees.
I will keep you posted on when the book will be available and any upcoming book signings.

Tip of the Month:
Leave your car keys on your night stand next to your bed. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to break into your house, just press the panic button of your car. The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator.

Good for President Obama!! Stem Cell Research, a leading decision in 2009.
What are stem cells?
Embryotic stem cells come from human eggs that have been fertilized in the laboratory and allowed to divide into a hollow ball of 50 to 150 cells known as a blastocyst. The cells lining the inside of the blastocyst are pluripotent, which means they have the potential to develop into any cell in the human body. |
