January 2011

Greetings!

SPECIAL 4TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE!!

Comics
 Hot Java owners Ken Davis and Sergio Macias with Carlease, Betsy Salkind, Jennie McNulty, Patricia Viletto, Tom "Hot Fingers" O'Malley, Les Kurkendall and Gayla Johnson

It's been four years since the brewing of the first cup of Laugh-A-Latte. Every third Saturday of the month (except May), comics and audience members have gathered at Hot Java Coffeehouse to share in the gift of laughter.

 An always versatile gourmet blend of comedians, from first timers to veterans from LOGO and Comedy Central, perform to a robust standing room only crowd. There's never a cover charge, fans are just asked to support the venue by purchasing a cup of coffee, a pastry or a sandwich.

Laugh-A-Latte is produced and hosted by Carlease! an actress/comic currently seen in the GEICO A Bird In The Hand commercial as well as TV shows and films such as Raising Hope, The Terminal,  and The Back Up Plan.  She travels and hosts on cruise ships and Pride Festivals all over the country.

Owners of Hot Java, Ken and Sergio, say the locals look forward to the monthly comedy show and have started arriving an hour early to get a seat.

Come on down and celebrate with us on January 15, 2011.

Ask Stage Mom

Dear Stage Mom,
I am an accountant who sings and dances on the side.  I know I am quite talented and when I do perform occasionally, people often ask me why I don't get paid for my gifts.  I've always been one who needs a steady paycheck but I see so many "not-so-talented" performers out there making a living doing their thing.  How come I can't seem to get anyone's attention so I can earn the big bucks too?

~ Passing Me By

Dear PMB,

 Let me use these 3 letters to answer your question:

P = Passion

It is clear to me that you probably have a passion for music since you like to sing and dance. There's your foundation.  Without passion it's difficult to get motivated to do the work necessary to turn that into a livelihood.

M = Marketing

The people you have observed who are making a living from their talents are constantly letting others know what they can do.  Find a need, then fill it.  Seek out the people who are looking for your services and let them know what you can do.

Create a network of people who do what you want to do.

Produce your own show, starring YOU!!

B = Business

I always tell people, this is show BUSINESS. Have your tools of the trade ready; a demo reel, photos, business cards (and not of your day job), a website, etc. It's great to have talent but no one is going to knock on a closed door looking for it.  Get out there and show us what your working with!!

 BE A STAR WHERE YOU ARE!

Email your questions about acting, comedy, solo show production or any aspect of show business to bitsnpieces@verizon.net and I'll answer them in the next month's Ask Stage Mom.
