Free Comedy Showcase in Long Beach
October 2009

Greetings!

LAUGH-A-LATTE
at Hot Java Coffeehouse

Anniversary cake

Laugh-A-Latte celebrated its 2nd anniversary in January 2009. The show takes place every third Saturday of the month and includes a line-up of comics from first-timers to stand-up veterans from LOGO and Comedy Central. An always versatile gourmet blend of comedians perform to standing room only audiences for the price of a cup of coffee, a pastry or a sandwich. Laugh-A-Latte is produced and hosted by Carlease! a comic and an actress seen in commercials, TV shows and films such as The Terminal and In Her Shoes.  She travels and hosts on Olivia Cruises as well as Pride Festivals all over the country.

The owners of the Hot Java Coffeehouse, Ken Davis and Sergio Macias, say the locals look forward to the monthly comedy show and have started arriving an hour early to get a seat.

Come on down and LAUGH-A-LATTE on October 17th, 2009.

I have been having so much fun in your stand-up comedy workshop, but as it gets closer to my showcase, I'm worried about how I'm going to feel that night before I take the stage.  Will I be nervous? Will I fall apart? What should I do?
~ A bundle of nerves

Dear Bundle,

I'm going to pass on advice that was given to me by my teacher and mentor, Judy Carter.

First of all, I have no idea how you're going to feel before you take the stage but it's perfectly normal to be nervous before a performance of any kind.  Even seasoned comics get the jitters for any number of reasons. Sometimes it's because they are trying new material or maybe an industry person has come to see them that night.  The bottom line is, there's no point in fighting it. The best thing to do is to be as prepared as possible.  This is my regular routine the day of any show I do:  I write out my set list early in the day, then I rehearse my act once or twice, then I play my favorite song...loud!  Then I go on with my day. I may run through a couple of bits in the car driving to the gig, but I again play something upbeat before I get there. Once at the venue I try to relax, breathe and stay focused. I remember Judy Carter's words, "It's not nerves, it's contained excitement." After the emcee calls your name and you are standing in front of the mic, it magically all goes away.  There's no turning back so you might as well have fun!

IT'S YOUR TIME TO SHINE IN '09!!

Email your questions about acting, comedy, or solo show production to [email protected] and I'll answer them in the next Show Biz Tip of the Month.

THE TRUTH IS IN THE JOKE
