Carlease's

Bits 'N Pieces
Free Comedy Showcase in Long Beach
April 2008
Greetings!

Welcome to Carlease's Bits 'N Pieces.
This ezine is for comics and fans of stand-up comedy.
I host a comedy room at Hot Java Coffee House in Long Beach every third Saturday of the month at 8:00 PM.  The show is called Laugh-A-Latte and features a versatile blend of your favorite gourmet stand-ups.  Some are seasoned comics working out new material, some are new going up for the first time, and others are returning to the stage 'cause they just can't stay away. Let's not forget the fans...we have been brewing up a packed house for one full year!!
I have been interviewed by several local publications and appeared on The Paula McColm show on UTV/Charter Communications.
There is no cover charge; just buy a cup of coffee, a pastry and be sure to tip your baristas.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Kat Howard

Kat Howard
1961 - 2008

The comedy world mourns the passing this month, of one of our hardest working and passionate buddies in the business.  Kat Howard and I have been friends for about 12 years, performing on stages from Little Frida's in West Hollywood to Hamburger Mary's in Washington DC. She then went on to produce a stand-up comedy show in every Hamburger Mary's franchise across the nation! She also produced a huge fund raiser for House of Hope in San Pedro, where we and other laughaholics performed to a sold out crowd.
She will be greatly missed by all her friends, colleagues and family, especially her Mom Leah.  I personally will miss her warm smiles, her hearty laughter, our long talks and her unconditional love.  She not only was one of my dearest friends, but one of my biggest fans!!
The support that she has given me throughout our friendship will carry me for the rest of my life.

I MISS YOU BUDDY.
KEEP THOSE ANGELS LAUGHING!!

Comedy Tip of the Month

Dear Carlease,

How do I get an agent?!!!!!

Well that certainly was the FAQ this month, and the answer will be different for every artist.
First of all, let me say that you will be asking the same question at various points in your comedy/acting career.  Here are just a few suggestions:

Know what type of agent you are looking for.  Commercial, stage, literary, film & TV, print, voice-over, etc.

Ask everyone you know in the business the above question and do whatever they tell you.

Get an agency listing from the Screen Actors Guild.

Buy the Agency Book from Samuel French and read the descriptions of agencies and what they are looking for.

Make some calls to agencies to set up an appointment or submit a photo and resume.

Have a photo and resume.

Have something to put on your resume.

Do a play and invite agents you are interested in. Be sure to comp them!

Take an agent to lunch.  (Good luck with this one.)

Do an agency showcase.

Look through the Players Directory to see who other actors are represented by.

Ask a friend who they are repped by and if that agent may be looking for your type.

Know thy type.

Be creative.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Email your questions about stand up comedy to bitsnpieces@roadrunner.com and I'll answer them in the next Comedy Tip of the Month !!
