This ezine is for comics and fans of stand-up comedy.
I host a comedy room at Hot Java Coffee House in Long Beach every third Saturday of the month at 8PM. The show is called Laugh-A-Latte and features a versatile blend of your favorite stand up comics. Some are seasoned comics working out new material, some are new going up for the first time, and others are returning to the stage cause they just can't stay away. Let's not forget the fans...the audience has been growing since January 2007.
I have been interviewed by several local publications and appeared on The Paula McColm show on UTV/Charter Communications.
There is no cover charge, just buy a cup of coffee or two and be sure to tip your baristas.

Name-dropping with California Flo |
| California Flo is the nickname my Uncle Tommy gave my mom after I moved to Los Angeles from New York. He made his transition a few years ago, but the name remains.
California Flo was here visiting and celebrating her 80th birthday. Two days after she arrived and two days before her actual birthday, the celebrations began. Imagine her surprise, when in the middle of the August Laugh-A-Latte show, Ken, Mikey and Vanessa present her with a huge cake...candles and all. But imagine my surprise when my easily embarrassed, often shy, sometimes vain mom takes the mike and tells everyone her age!! Wow!
On Sunday, we went to the Inn of the Seventh Ray for a going away brunch for my friend Michelle and her son, SaMan. There was a slice of cake, a candle, singing and signing.
Later that night, we went to Leimert Park to see a solo show at The Lucy Florence Coffee Shop. That's where I'll be doing my show Dec. 9, 16, 23 and 30 (my birthday). At the end of the show, the producers had star shaped cupcakes, candles, champagne AND a gift for anyone having a birthday that day!! Of course, there was more singing. Lord, my mama can hang!!
The next day was her actual birthday so I had a special surprise dinner planned where she got to meet and share yet another slice of cake with none other than Steven Spielberg's mother, Leah Adler.  The best part for me was when Leah said to my mom, "Our children play together!!!

Just when I though things would quiet down before we drove up to the Heart Castle for the weekend, we find out that my dear friend Sherri Shepherd is moving to New York to host The View and having a going away party that same weekend!!! All of a sudden, my mom doesn't want to go to Hearst Castle anymore. Mom, are you getting star-struck?!?!?!

| Comedy Tip of the Month |

Got an email from one of my clients this week that said: "I am having a hard time booking shows. I feel like there is a secret club and I cannot get in."
Me: Have the bookers/producers given you a reason for not booking you?
Client: Oh, they know me....well, they know of me.
Me: Have they seen you perform?
Client: No.
Me: Well what is your connection?
Client: I've sent about 5 people an email on myspace and I haven't heard from anybody.
(Silence)
First of all, way back in the day, when I first started doing comedy, there was no myspace!!! And secondly, aren't there about a billion people on that site? How could you possibly stand out, stand up and get noticed?? Especially if you're new to the game and nobody knows your name.
When Sherri, Toni and I started doing stand-up back in the '90's we hit every comedy club, open mike and lip sync contest within a 60 mile radius of Los Angeles. We rode together, laughed together, cried together. And sometimes, in the rain, Sherri would even take the bus!!! Which one of us in on The View? Get my point???
You've got to get out there and meet these producers, see their shows, watch other comics and network! Let them get a chance to know you AND your work. That's when the bookings happen.
I was one of the people my client sent an email to on myspace. I was busy entertaining my Mom so didn't really have a chance to check out her page. She came to the August show, and after meeting her, I wanted to see more, checked out her video and now she's booked for an upcoming Laugh A Latte show. See how it works? Let your personality shine. Talent is a only a small slice of the pie. |
