Greetings Fellow Candy Lover!

May is the month for the National Confectioners Association's Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago. Village Candy is alway on the hunt for the newest, tastiest, most sinful sweet treats on the planet. And the Expo brings together a diverse grouping of confectioners in one place to show their latest sweets and snacks and hint at their plans for the year. Next month we should be able to bring you the highlights, projected trends and newest treats to look forward to.
Mother's Day

Candy - no diamond, but sure hits the spot!

You can't go wrong with candy for your mom, mom-in-law, grand mom, mom of your own kids, or your mom-to-be. Village Candy has some very special gift baskets we hand-packed for this holiday, in addition to our variety of Big Retro Candy Collections, boxed chocolate assortments, salted caramels and chocolate truffles. Or make it really personal and have us assist you in packing your own box of hand-selected candies. She'll forget all about that car, diamond or vacation you promised. Hah!

Just so you are in the know, the current Mother's Day holiday, as it's celebrated in the U.S., was created by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, WV, in 1908, as a day to honor mothers, to realize her mother's dream of making a celebration for all mothers. The idea didn't really take off until she enlisted the services of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker. She kept promoting the holiday until President Woodrow Wilson made it an official national holiday in 1914. The holiday eventually became so highly commercialized that many, including Ms. Jarvis, considered it a "Hallmark holiday". Jarvis eventually ended up opposing the holiday she had helped to create.

In the U.S., Mother's Day remains one of the biggest days for sales of flowers, greeting cards, and of course CANDY; it's also the biggest holiday for long-distance telephone calls.

Strawberry & Cream Bites
New from Kookaburra

Just in to the Village - Kookaburra's new irresistible Strawberry
Kookaburra Strawberry & Cream Bites
& Cream Bites are a delicious variation on a classic flavor combo. Great tasting strawberry liquorice meets sweet cream in two different ways: strawberry liquorice bites with a cream center, and strawberry liquorice bites encased in a creamy outer. Together in one bag. For all red liquorice fans, this is
Kookaburra Liquorice Shooterssure to be a new favorite! And
don't forget another recent
addition -
Licorice Shooters - fruit flavored liquorice in all colors/flavors, including lemon, strawberry, blueberry and cola, filled with a creamy fondant, all in a cute flower-like shape.

Kookaburra Liquorice began as the idea of three Aussie men - a father and his two sons. During their travels to America, they discovered there was no 'real' Australian soft eating style liquorice available which they themselves loved to snack on. And so a family company was formed to export traditional licorice products direct from Australia to the U.S. to share this delicious treat with Americans.

Kookaburra Liquorice is an American company, based just outside of Seattle, WA, with Australian directors. They're the most widely known "Australian-style" liquorice brand in the US, thought they're not actually sold down under. And yes, you're correct - this candy is usually spelled "licorice" in the U.S.
Chiller Theater
A report on all things sodarific: what's new in the fridge, tastings and interesting tidbits from the world of bottled effervescence.

Our 4th Annual Root Beer Tasting was a huge hit. We had an excellent turnout of sophisticated veteran rootbeerholics, along with a whole new crop of novice tapsuckers. As usual, a fun time was had by all (or at least all that I heard from). And the officially monitored scientific polling results are in (certified once again by the accounting firm of Dewey, Cheatem and Howe):

Oh, and as usual, we picked one ballot-box-stuffer for a prize, as a token of our appreciation. This tasting, it's Jessie Schell. C'mon down to pick up your 4-pack of the top 4!
Waialua Pineapple Soda
From the Great State of Hawaii
Waialua Pineapple Soda
We ordered two cases of Waialua Pineapple Soda, after a customer told us it was the best pineapple soda they'd ever tasted. It arrived in February, with a "best by" date of March 2012! Not a good way to do business. But it still tastes great (we sampled). Pour a tall glass and plop in a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you're good to go. Or throw in a freshly sliced strawberry.
AND, if you act now, it's a BOGO - buy one, get one free!

And One More Thing...
Son of Candy Alphabet

Candy Alphabet s we did, many moons ago, it's time once again for that fan fave: CANDY ALPHABET! Yay!

Name the candy that begins with the letter pictured here as you'd find it on the package. If you're the first to guess correctly, you could win a gargantuan prize. Oh, and by the way, you have to submit that guess by email to (not just shout it to the dog snuggling at your feet, rudely scaring her awake and making her pee on your socks).

Next week we'll fill you in on what you so miserably couldn't remember or were too bashful to try (even though you still got your socks wet).
Village Candy is an old-time, new-fangled retail shop specializing in a unique selection of retro and current bulk and novelty candy, artisan chocolates, glass-bottled pop and candy-themed gifts. Oh, and remember customer service? It's back!

We are here Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, but on Wednesday we stay late until 8! We are closed Sunday and Monday.
