Remember our Veterans and Active Military on Memorial Day!
|
Gettysburg has a long tradition of honoring military men and women and veterans on Memorial Day. On May 25, the Gettysburg Joint Veterans Memorial Day Commission will host its
142nd annual Memorial Day observance. The Gettysburg Memorial Day parade is the
oldest Memorial Day parade in the country!
The annual Memorial Day parade begins at 2:00 p.m. and travels through town to the National Cemetery just off of Baltimore St. Immediately following the parade, the annual memorial service at the Soldier's National Cemetery will begin. The Keynote speaker for the ceremony is William H. Webster, former Director of Central Intelligence, and current Chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. During the service, school children will strew flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, Civil War era music will be provided, and the program will conclude with a wreath laying ceremony honoring all fallen veterans.
In addition, Gettysburg will hosts patients from Walter Reed Army Medical Center located in Washington D.C. The veterans will arrive in Gettysburg the morning of May 25, and will be given keys to the city by Gettysburg Mayor William Troxell and greeted by William Webster. During their visit to Gettysburg they will be treated to a luncheon and private battlefield tour. They will also participate in the the 142nd Memorial Day and will assist in laying wreaths during the ceremony at the National Cemetery.
The Gettysburg Gift Center is proud to carry the complete line of pewter by veteran, historian and sculptor Andrew Chernak. In honor of Memorial Day, customers who purchase a "Freedom Series" sculpture by Chernak will receive a free American Flag lapel pin. Chernak served during Vietnam, is the recipient of two purple hearts and in 2006 was Veteran of the Year by the Vietnam veterans association, Vietnow.
