April 18 & 19, 2009 marks the 13th Annual History Meets the Arts Festival throughout the town of Gettysburg. Artists, sculptors, and craftsmen converge on the town to display their work. Visitors are able to visit different galleries and shops and meet the different artists, ask questions, and see their work.
The American Civil War Museum will host 5 talented artists and craftsmen on Saturday, April 18! Sculptor Andrew Chernak, artist Bradley Schmehl, artillerist George Funt, Victorian hair jeweler Lucy Cadwallader, and jewelry maker Becky Schmehl. There is plenty to see and do during History Meets the Arts - mark your calendar!

History Meets the Arts at the American Civil War Museum Complex
|
The streets of Gettysburg are buzzing with visitors and special events! History Meets the Arts will be held the weekend of April 18-19. This townwide festival offers an assortment of artist from all genres and areas of history. The museum complex will host a number of artist during the festival. Artists scheduled to appear are as follows:
- Andrew Chernak, sculptor 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- George Funt, artillerist 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
- Bradley Schmehl, artist 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
- Lucy Cadwallader, victorian hair jeweler 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m
- Becky Schmehl, antique jewelry maker 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
The museum complex carries a complete collection of work from each of these artists. During the event, many of the artists will unveil new releases and display works currently in progress. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity and talk with the artists, ask questions, and get artwork personalized.
Artist Bradley Schmehl will be releasing 3 new giclee portraits during History Meets the Arts. Reynolds, Sherman, and Stuart are the newest Generals to be added to his Civil War collection. Each 8x10 giclee portrait will be $55. The pieces will be on display and available for purchase during History Meets the Arts. In addition to Schmehl's newest releases, the Gift Center is offering a special promotion in honor of History Meets the Arts. During the month of April, all Bradley Schmehl prints are 25% off plus FREE shipping! Offer is valid on prints only (excludes giclees).
Sculptor Francis Barnum will not be appearing at History Meets the Arts, however his Annual Event miniature will be available for purchase. The 2009 event piece is "John Brown, the Abolitionist". The cost of the piece is $95. Barnum will be appearing at the Gift Center during the 4th of July weekend. He will be available to meet and talk with visitors, and unveil new releases!
Orders for artwork received prior to April 16, 2009 can be held for the artist to sign, and then shipped after the event or held for customer pick-up. Artist,
historian, and veteran Andrew Chernak will make a special appearance at the Gettysburg Gift Center on April 18, from 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. 2008 was a busy year full of ground breaking ceremonies and memorial dedications. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Gift Center to talk to Chernak about his recent works, and upcoming projects.
Most recently, Chernak attended the unveiling ceremony of the bronze relief plaque of Spc. Keith A. Campbell. Chernak was commissioned to create a plaque of the final moments of Campbell's life, when he used himself as a shield for a wounded comrade. The bronze relief was unveiled on January 7, 2009 at the Keith A. Campbell Library in historic Fort Sam Houston, Texas. 
Chernak continues to work on commissioned projects, but hopes to release a new piece in his Civil War pewter collection in the near future. In recent years he has not been able to devote the time needed to expand the collection, even though it is one of his most popular series. Andrew

History Comes to Life at the American Civil War Museum

Civil War reenactors converge on the grounds of the American Civil War Museum most weekends April - November. Visitors are able to take a step back in time and see what life was truly like for the Civil War soldier and civilian. Visitors will see first hand what camp life was like, learn how to fire a musket, and so much more! Every member of the family, young and old alike will gain a unique perspective and new understanding of life during the Civil War era. This hands-on experience goes beyond textbooks and the classroom and transports you back in history.
During History Meets the Arts, the Civil War Heritage Foundation will have camp set-up at the museum. This unique group of reenactors consist of Union and Confederate Generals and notable figures that were instrumental to the war. There will be special presentations taking place throughout the weekend. Take a minute to talk to General Lee, or perhaps hear President Abraham Lincoln deliver the Gettysburg Address. The museum's living history program always offers something new and exciting for visitors! Come be a part of history!

Civil War Era Church Service

Come to the American Civil War Museum for a non-denominational Civil War era Church Service!
Sunday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. Chaplain Rene Kinard and his wife Rommi will offer a Civil War era church service on the front lawn of the museum. Kinard, who portrays a Union Chaplain says his service is "both north and south friendly." The service will take a step back in time to when our nation was facing hardships and war, but yet tying into todays world. It will be a peaceful service full of music and singing, and uplifting messages! It is open to the public, all are welcome!
Chaplain Rene and Rommi will be conducting additional services at the museum throughout the summer. Services will be May 24, July 5, and November 22.

Historic Discount Days at the Gettysburg Gift Center! |
The Gettysburg Gift Center has a calendar full of discounts and special offers that will take place from April through December! Every month, we will pick a few items to sell at a promotional price, and the promotion only takes place on the day of a historical event. Such as the first day of the Civil War, or General Meade's Birthday. We will determine the product, the discount, and the day it is available to the customer. All you need to do is make sure you mark your calendar and take advantage of the phenomenal sales! Some items are up to 40% off!
