Jewelry At Its Finest

BarnumThe Gift Center will host two of the most notable jewelry makers of Civil War era jewelry.  Antique jewelry maker Rebecca Schmehl will be appearing Saturday, June 28 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturday July 5 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the complex.  Victorian hair jeweler Lucy Cadwallader will be appearing Saturday, July 5 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Each of these ladies is known for different styles of jewelry, but they share one thing in common - their love for history and the jewelry they make.  The quality of jewelry they produce is exceptional.

Lucy produces jewelry made of human, horse, or synthetic hair.  Hair jewelry was popular during the Civil War era as a means to remember loved ones who went off to war, and to pass down through the generations as a family heirloom.  Lucy spends hours producing intrigue bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and has even produced rings.  Lucy will be at the Gift Center greeting customers and demonstrating her work.  There will be pieces available for purchase, or you can have her create a piece especially for you.

Every clasp and setting of Rebecca Marie Jewelry comes with a touch of history.  Jewelry maker, Becky Schmehl, has always had a love of jewelry, especially antique pieces.

"I felt I needed my own creative outlet, and jewelry seemed to be the perfect choice," states Becky.

becky's chockerBy using antique settings to re-create jewelry of a by-gone era, Becky is able to pass a bit of history on to her customers.  Every piece of jewelry is hand-set by Becky. She works very hard to use colors and settings that suit a variety of styles. Jewelry can also be customized at your request. Most can be done while you wait!

Artists Make Special Appearance at Gift Center

Sculptor Andrew Chernak and Artillerist George Funt will make a special appearance at the Gift Center on July 5 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in conjunction with the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.  "It is fitting to have both these skilled artists showcase their work during the anniversary weekend," states General Manager Tammy Myers.

Artillerist George Funt produces 1/8th scale field cannons, limbers, and caissons.  Recently, he has re-introduced his bronze cannon line. Funt's cannons are hand made George Funtand completely assembled by him in his own foundry.  His attention to detail and historical accuracy make his artillery pieces a rare collectible. Each cannon is produced from the original blue prints of those used in battle during the Civil War. Cannons and field pieces can be purchased the day of event and personalized.  Custom orders can be placed, delivery time is a minimum of 6 weeks.

Sculptor Andrew Chernak will also be on hand to talk to customers about his Civil War pewter collection and upcoming releases.  The number of commissioned projects continues to grow for Chernak, keeping him busy sculpting and doing research.  Each sculpture Chernak creates takes hours of research.  The goal is to offer to the collector an attractive sculpture, but more importantly a historically accurate collectible. Chernak will be available to meet with customers and personalize sculptures the day of the event.
