Two 'Gems' to Appear at the Gift Center

BeckyOn July 7, two of Gettysburg's finest 'Gems' will be appearing at the Gettysburg Gift Center. Jewelry maker, Rebecca Marie Schmehl, and Victorian Hair Jeweler, Lucy Cadwallader will both be appearing at the gift center.

Each artisan produces unique and different styles of Civil War jewelry.

LucyBecky Schmehl uses antique settings to re-create jewelry of a by-gone era. Every piece of jewelry is hand-set by Becky. She is also able to customize jewelry at your request. Most pieces can be done while you wait!

Lucy Cadwallader produces a completely different style of jewelry. She uses human hair, horse hair, and synthetic hair to create bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and cameos. Popular during the Civil War and in Victorian times, few people today are familiar with this lost art. Lucy is able to custom design pieces, and take orders using your own hair or the hair of a loved one.

Make sure you stop by the gift center to watch these 'Gems' at work!

Living History Events at Gift Center

In an on-going effort to bring history to life and provide interactive programming for visitors, the American Civil War Museum & Gettysburg Gift Center will host a number of Living History events beginning on July 5 and running through July 8.

USCCThe US Christian Commission, which is dedicated to telling the stories of those who served their country and Lord during the American Civil War, will be on site July 5 - 7 to conduct outreach programs. These programs will run from 1 pm - 4 pm each day. Not only will they greet visitors and answer questions, but they will also be teaming up with a number of youth groups from local churches to have a letter writing station for soldiers currently serving in Iraq. In addition to the daily outreach activities, they will be presenting a Civil War related drama.

Visitors will also be able to attend non-denominational re-enactment Chapel Services beginning July 5 through reenactment weekend. The Christian Commission will present Chapel Services in the evenings from 7 pm - 9 pm, July 5 - 7.

rene_rommiOn Sunday, July 8, Chaplain Rene and his wife Rommi will present a morning Chapel Service at 10 am. Chaplain Rene has been performing chapel services at the Gift Center for more than five years. His services are non-denominational and incorporate Civil War era ministry, with modern topics. The emotions, fears and beliefs of both soldier and family in war-time does not change, merely the location and the people involved change.

The Civil War Heritage Foundation will present Living History programs beginning July 6 and running through July 8. Members of the Civil War Heritage Foundation portray notable historic figures of the Civil War era such as generals, other military officers and enlisted men, politicians, musicians, doctors, nurses, civilians, and children. There will be a complete encampment set up on the front lawn of the American Civil War Museum, and members of the Heritage Foundation will give first person accounts, talks and presentations to visitors.

The American Civil War Museum hosts Living History encampments every weekend from mid-April through November. Visit our website at www.e-gettysburg.com for a complete listing of our weekend Living History groups!

Funt Pursues Other Interests

FuntEffective immediately, Artillerist George Funt will no longer be producing brass-barreled cannons. Pouring the brass has always been a safety issue; not to mention the increased cost of raw materials.

Additionally George has decided to pursue other business interests. Funt will continue fill orders for his limbers, caissons, and iron-barreled cannons, but they will take up to six months to produce. The level of success in his new venture will dictate future availability of his artillery pieces. Prices are subject to change after July 8, 2007.

If you are interested in receiving a list of available cannons, please contact us at [email protected] or call us at 717-334-6245.

Chernak Continues Bronze Projects, Announces Companion to "A New York Yankee"

Chernak-BuglerSculptor Andrew Chernak is not slowing down, if anything, he's busier than ever! 2007 is nearly half over and he is in the midst of numerous bronze projects. One of his projects is for a Veterans Group in Alaska. This is in addition to current works in progress in Illinois, Texas and New Hampshire. On top of all the private works he has been commissioned to do, he is continually working on the design of the "Gold Star Mothers National Monument" which will reside in our nation's capital.

These honors are singularly unique in the world of pewter sculptors. Despite the huge demand for bronze statuary, Andrew Chernak still pursues his passion of Civil War pewter sculpture. "A New York Yankee", Chernak's first release of this year, portrays Union soldiers enjoying what little free time they had playing baseball. On July 7, Chernak will release the companion piece, "The Pitcher". The cost of the sculpture is $60.

Chernak previously released the 8th sculpture in his Event Miniature series, "The Bugler"at $79. In November, Chernak will release his final sculpture of the year, "The Drummer". This unique sculpture will depict an Irish Brigade drummer boy at the Battle of Fredericksburg.
