Welcome from the General Chair Jonathan Bard Dear Friends of Operations Research and Management Science,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Austin, one of the most exciting and livable cities in the United States. We are a diverse community of entrepreneurs, technologists, artists, and musicians, priding ourselves on being a bit more than out of the ordinary. In fact, we celebrate being "weird," as well as being a hub of creativity and progressive thinking.
From the early days of the Republic when the Texas Rangers brought law and order to the unruly, Austin's population has doubled every 20 or 30 years. Much of the recent growth has been a result of a technology boom that began more than four decades ago, when Tracor Industries set up shop in northwest Austin. Others soon followed - IBM, Texas Instruments, 3M, Motorola, Advanced Micro Devices, Samsung, and Dell. Today, we are national trendsetters in sustainable living, green construction, and alternative energy sources, not to mention the focal point of Silicon Hills. The same entrepreneurial drive that led 19-year-old Michael Dell to launch a Fortune 500 company from his University of Texas dorm room has also made Austin a mecca for all aspects of high-tech and the arts. Today's Blog Postings
"INFORMS comes to Austin, the city of Live Music and Great Food!" posted by Liwen (Brandon) Chen.
To me, there are three very exciting things to look forward to for the rest of the year: starting my new job as an Assistant Professor in Marketing at City University of Hong Kong in July; having another baby boy in August; and returning to Austin for INFORMS Annual Meeting in November! I have been in Austin for almost eight years since I came to the U.S. It is difficult to even think of leaving Austin after so many years of happy times. Read more.

Roman Polanski Short Films w/Live Music by Sza/Za
7pm at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown at the Ritz Between 1958 and 1962, the acclaimed Polish-French director and Academy Award winner, Roman Polanski made a series of short films, most at the renowned Lodz Film School. From playful film making exercises: "Murder" and "Teeth Smile" (1957), through the metaphorical "Break Up the Dance" (1957) and "Mammals" (1962) to his award winning graduation film, "Two Men and the Wardrobe" (San Francisco International Film Festival, Brussels EXPO 1958) -- the films reveal Polanski's surreal and dark style, his masterful storytelling ability, and the restless search for the truth about the human nature, however crooked and evil it would turn out to be.
