Remembering Russell Ackoff

Russell AckoffIn the 1970s, Russell Ackoff, the former ORSA President, set many an operations researcher's teeth on edge with his frank criticisms of how he believed the profession had gone astray. Ever provocative and thoughtful, he died last week at the age of 90. Read tributes to the former Wharton professor at The Economist and The Ackoff Center and The Huffington Post.

Organization Science: Special Issue on Learning from Rare Events: How Organizations Learn (or Fail to Learn) from Unusual Experiences.
Organization ScienceThe September-October 2009 issue of Organization Science presents rare and tragic events and reveals how both individuals and their organizations can benefit from active efforts to learn from these events. The articles examine a framework for comparing and analyzing the affects on learning, and reveal what organizations learn "through" rare events that may prevent future tragedies. Authors also explore how learning from a crisis involves not only understanding why they occur, but how to develop organizational designs for preventing reoccurrences.
