First Teleconference, with WINFORMS and Boston Chapters Examining Economy
INFORMS' Communities broke new ground on July 14 when chapters from Washington and Boston got to share the same speaker in person and on a very big screen. MIT Prof. Andrew Lo, an expert and, some would say, a prophet on the Great Recession, came to the wrong audience with the question, "Kill All the Quants?" But he provided all the right answers, explaining why the models that generated securitization, credit default swaps, and other financial vehicles failed - with lots of help from government officials, investors, and the American public. Thanks to Les Servi in Boston; Kevin Gormley in Virginia; Mitre, which hosted in both cities; and all those in Boston and DC who made this a provocative first. |

O.R. in the News: Netflix Prize Closing in on Winner
After nearly three years and entries from more than 50,000 contestants, a multinational team says that it has met the requirements to win the million-dollar Netflix Prize: It developed powerful algorithms that improve the movie recommendations made by Netflix's existing software by more than 10 percent.
The online movie rental service uses its Cinematch software to analyze each customer's film-viewing habits and recommends other movies that a customer might enjoy. Because accurate recommendations increase Netflix's appeal to its customers, the movie rental company started a contest in October 2006, offering $1 million to the first contestant who could improve the predictions by at least 10 percent.

The International Institute of Forecasters, in collaboration with SAS, has announced a grant of financial support for research on how to improve the state of the art in forecasting methods and business forecasting applications. The last twenty plus years of forecasting research have shown major changes in the theoretical ideas underpinning forecasting effectiveness; however, there has been less impact on forecasting methods and applications. To promote research in this area, the grant promotes research on forecasting principles and practical applications with real-world comparisons. http://www.forecasters.org/grants.html The awards will be (2) two $5,000 grants. Applications should be submitted to the IIF Office by September 30, 2009. For more information on this grant opportunity, click here. |
