New Partnership: INFORMS and ISA Programs Funded by Sloan Foundation
INFORMS and the Industry Studies Association (ISA) have just secured funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to work together on two innovative projects. One project will establish an Industry Studies Best Paper Prize to recognize one or more papers published in INFORMS journals that demonstrate industry knowledge and engagement at the academic/practice interface as well as research excellence. The second project will organize industry studies panels, with the goal of bringing cutting-edge academic work on particular topics to industry practitioners and policy makers. Panelists will be drawn from several academic disciplines and will participate in substantial preparation, including a one-day preparatory workshop to promote an open exchange of ideas. The panel presentation itself will then be scheduled for an INFORMS Practice Conference in the spring. Details about both programs will be available in the fall of 2009. |
Spotlight on Communities: MAS
The Military Applications Society (MAS) is a technical society within INFORMS. MAS membership is open to anyone on the planet interested in applying operations research to topics relevant to the global defense community. MAS seeks to advance research in global defense-related topics, government operations and security, and nation support; foster high standards in the practice of military operations research; promote global communication among developers and users of military operations research tools and techniques; and help develop students and practitioners of military operations research who can address the complex challenges of the 21st century. MAS achieves these goals through publications, meetings, and awards independently and in concert with sister societies such as the Military Operations Research Society. Key publications include the quarterly peer-reviewed Military Operations Research Journal and the news-bulletin Phalanx. MAS sponsors a cluster of sessions and a reception at all INFORMS annual meetings. Furthermore, MAS cohosts a separate, biennial symposium. MAS awards include the Koopman and Steinhardt prizes for contributions to military operations research. The Bonder scholarship supports promising doctoral candidates. MAS also honors the top operations research graduate at each U.S. service academy. For more information visit http://www.informs.org/site/mas/. Predicting Breakdowns Industrial and systems engineers developed a way to monitor machinery, allowing them to determine the remaining useful life of parts based on their condition at that moment.
Fast and Furious College Kids Engineering students built, tested, and drove miniature race cars to compete in a formula car competition.
Future of TV: Hidden Commercials Computer scientists designed software that allows an advertiser to place unobtrusively a still photo inside an existing video.
