New! Science of Better Podcasts

Listen to INFORMS podcastsHow can O.R. experts communicate exciting research and work to business and science listeners? There's a new way - INFORMS is now introducing Science of Better podcasts, a series of interviews with newsmakers and researchers from our very own community.

Point your browser to http://www.scienceofbetter.org/podcast to stream or download the first two podcasts -
  • Intel's Karl Kempf gives an Intel Inside look at analytics in the leading chip manufacturer
  • Healthcare expert Michael W. Carter looks at what's wrong, and could be right, with healthcare in the U.S. and Canada
Upcoming interviews will be with ORMS Today columnist Mohan Sodhi about a supply chain specialist's views on the international economic crisis, Justin Cohen of the Clinton Foundation on AIDS in Africa, former Operations Research Editor-in-Chief Lawrence Wein on preventing a bioterror attack, and a team of SAS analysts who helped a North Carolina school district cope with the need for smart growth.

The Science of Better podcasts are intended both for INFORMS members and for general audiences interested in business, science, and math. Alert your friends, colleagues, and clients to the podcast series--those interested can sign up to receive word of future podcasts via RSS feed. You can also alert your friends to the podcasts via social media, like Facebook.

If you're working on an exciting project and want to share it with listeners in a future segment, contact INFORMS Communications Director Barry List at barry.list@informs.org.

Call for Nominations: 2009 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice

The INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice will be given annually, if there is a suitable recipient, to a university or college teacher for excellence in teaching the practice of O.R. The purpose of this award is to recognize a teacher who has succeeded in helping his or her students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective practitioners of operations research or the management sciences. An "effective practitioner" has respect for, understanding of, and the skills to surmount both the practical difficulties and the technical challenges of doing good O.R. work. The award will be presented at the INFORMS annual meeting in San Diego, California. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2009 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice. Eligibility and submission details can be found here.

Blog On: Michael Trick Writes about Membership in INFORMS and our Decreasing Numbers

When I was elected President of INFORMS in 2000 (my presidential year was 2002: they ease you into the job!), I was very proud to become president of a 14,000 member society (at the age of 42: don't let the grey hair fool you). 14,000? Actually probably 12,000. Maybe 11,500. Where did all the members go? Read more.
